The personal library of the late lecturer Vera Babalikashvili was handed over to Akaki Tsereteli State University library. The ceremony organized by the staff of the English Philology Department and the Faculty of Humanities was officially opened by the Dean of the faculty, Irma Kipiani. The Rector Giorgi Ghavtadze and the Vice-Rector Shalva Kirtadze also addressed the audience emphasizing the role of Vera Babalikashvili in bringing up and educating generations of university graduates. The head of the university library Giorgi Chichinadze expressed deep gratitude to the relatives of the late lecturer for their decision to present the library to the university.

After the official part of the ceremony former students and co-workers of Vera Babalikashvili were given the opportunity to share their memories about the teacher loved by everyone, whose rare talent knowledge and personal qualities enabled her to gain great respect and love of her students and colleagues. Special attention was also drawn to the role of Vera Babalikashvili in the long-standing friendship of Georgian and Jewish people and her deep love towards both. Among those who shared their opinions and memories were Prof. Madona Megrelishvili, the head of the Language Centre Natia Zviadadze, Rusudan Gvilava, Tsitsino Babukhadia, Leila Tandilashvili, Maia Alavidze, Irma Grdzelidze, Eka Archvadze and others. Nunu Charkviani, who read her essay about Vera Babalikashvili, made the event particularly moving. The conclusive speech was made by the head of the English Philology Department, Nino Nizharadze.

The evening turned out to be incredibly warm, frank and largely spontaneous without any artificial phrases. Every word came from the heart and was absolutely natural. All of us attending the event have our own memories about our teacher Vera, as we generally used to call her. On this day we had a chance to share at least some part of these memories and it was wonderful to see how moving and at the same time familiar these stories were. Everybody wished to say something and the event lasted longer than expected, but time flew unnoticeably fast as it always happens when we do things with pleasure. And the reason for this was Vera Babalikashvili, who had greatly contributed to the process of education and personal formation of numerous generations. Her knowledge, intelligence, experience, interest in novelty, commitment to her work as well as her generous heart and many other qualities will always remain exemplary for everybody who knew her and especially for those of us who were blessed to be her students.

She Taught and Nurtured us!

Ms Vera Babalikashvli was my first teacher. When I first set my foot in this university to study the English Language in 1957, I met a highly distinguished woman, who had finished St Petersburg University and was a demanding and strict person.

Despite the fact that I studied at school No 1 with the strictest rules, discipline and requirements, I was astonished by Ms Vera’s attitude towards her work and approach to students. There were only 13 students at that time and only five of us graduated. The rest of the students were not able to graduate from the English Language Speciality.

I was a distinguished student for her and she was extremely happy when I was the first from our department and, presumably, from the whole university who had the opportunity to do my post graduate course at Maurice Thorez Moscow State Institute of Foreign Languages and who returned to our home town with the degree of Candidate of Science. It was an unprecedented case in our speciality.

Ms Vera felt even happier when I returned to my Doctoral studies in Moscow to the same university after being the Dean of the faculty. She couldn’t hide her delight about the fact that in the Soviet Union, there were only 7 Doctors of Philology in English Linguistics (5 in Moscow, 2 in Leningrad) and I became the eighth. She believed that there was her contribution to it as well and she was right. I would like to tell you that her wonderful family considered me to be her daughter, and I think, I deserved it (No, I don’t boast!)

I would like to tell the young that they should take care of their teachers. I did take care of my dear teacher Vera till the end of her life. She passed away at the age of 95. Before that, she hadn’t ceased her work for a second, remaining as strict, demanding and a brilliant professional as when I first became her student.

She not only taught me English but made me aware of high ideals as well.
Thank you, my dear teacher Vera!!!

What She was like…

Portrait of Vera Babalikashvili

Frail, noiselessly walking, modest, serious with adults and childish with children , a real professional, extremely devoted to her job, outgoing with superb communication skills and a collegial style. This is how we remember her. She lived a decent life and passed away without bothering anyone , as if the whole world she had lived in was just her little life road. She was always surrounded by her students but still suffered from loneliness. Surrounded by her loving sisters and brother who supported her, she sought her real love.

She lived her life consciously and reasonably till her last breath. Each step she took in was carefully thought over and her each movement was done cautiously. Having reconcile to her fate, she always seemed to regret about something silently... Having painful life experience, she was enormously strong to overcome all the difficulties. She was always considerate of her sister with whom she lived and when the latter was seriously ill did her utmost to help her.

She was open-minded, devoted to her faith a worthy descendant of an honored ancestry and a great follower of Jewish traditions.

She rarely complained and never said a harsh word. She was always there for all the highs and lows of her friends’ lives and was always ready to share their pain and sorrow. She treated everybody equally, as if they all were her close friends.

She was a noble woman, who lacked external splendor but possessed internal beauty, pride and sensibility. She was a woman whose life was not a bed of roses but despite all the difficulties she radiated out her love and affection which touched everybody around her.

Time will pass but our memory of her will always remain in our hearts. We will always miss her and keep on calling her: "Teacher", "Dear Vera"," Ms. Vera". She will continue to live in hearts and minds of all those who do not forget the past easily.

Ms. Vera has her own place on the list of honorary people of the University.

You will be missed and will be always loved, Ms. Vera.

Planets, the Earth and our Country –it was the name of an integrate lesson arranged by Madlen Giorgadze. The fourth years took part in it.

Planets, the Earth and our Country- was the subject of the integral lesson for fourth-year pupils held by Madlen Giorgadze in the 9th school. As it always happens traditionally Madlen’s lesson was amazing.

There was a mixture of warm colours and wonderful atmosphere in the room that was a good premise for coming New Year. The eyes of the young students were full of interest and they welcome all the guests attending the event. Among them was an American PhD student Alex Langstass.

The young students introduced planets, the earth and the whole system of the sun. Some of them were stars, some - the planets Mars, Mercury or Venus. With the help of their hard-working teacher the students imitated the day and the night and sang some songs that made the event more colourful and bright.

Then the students wearing Georgian traditional clothes danced some Georgian dances introducing our country and our town. They and their teacher, got huge applauses and likes from the audience.

At the end of the event the participants received traditional certificates and memorable gifts always prepared for them by their teacher, who thinks about her students’ good mood all the time and never forgets even minor details that make children’s lives more colorful.

Some days ago one of the creative teachers Madlen Giorgadze pleasantly surprised us once again. She showed us a perfect example of peer teaching along with her colleague, a teacher of Georgian language. They conducted a joint lesson with third year pupils at Kutaisi public school N 9. Their ability to present the teaching in such an interesting way produced one of the most memorable evenings in their school’s history.

We all greatly appreciated Madlen’s approach to the talent and ability of her pupils and her personal attitude to them. She showed all her love and passion to teaching as well as to each of them. I think it is her approach to teaching that makes her pupils so bright. We saw that even very young learners managed to communicate in English.

I am grateful for the time and effort she took to share her teaching methods and experience with us. Her enthusiasm is contagious. She makes the lives of her pupils exciting, She makes the teaching and learning enjoyable and fun.
