World Premiere in Kutaisi

I
t took a year for Kutaisi Newport International Association to prepare the celebratory visit activities characterized by a very special mood which took place in our city on 14-17 June.

I
t seems quite easy to speak about the preparation for this event now but, actually, at the very start, when the idea of the celebration was only initiated, it was a much more difficult process. We wanted to hold a uniquely effective festival of friendship (as the President of the KNIA and the Mayor of Kutaisi – Shota Murgulia referred to those days) with one event which would become its memorable culmination. After a lot of discussions and thoughts we humbly came up with an idea to stage the first English-language performance in Kutaisi, though as you can imagine, as soon as we thought about it, we got worried and even somehow frightened… But, fortunately, after a while this decision seemed to us quite real and, first of all, owing to the art director of the drama theatre Giorgi Sikharulidze known for his great musical taste and professionalism in the theatre world.

T
he play was chosen. It was “Pygmalion” by B. Shaw - a musical comedy in which any falsification was out of the question as it is very well-known by all British theatre goers word for word. But, in spite of it, we dared!

The Mayor of the city Shota Murgulia promised Madonna Megrelishvili financial help without any hesitation and the first step towards the successful end was made!

From the very first day we all looked forward to 6 p.m. of June 15 when the curtain was to rise and the first sounds to be heard. But more than that, we could not wait to listen to the British guests who were speaking about the performance in Professor Higgins’ native language!

The performance which took place on June 15, 2016 was a huge success and met with a storm of applause by the audience. We think it was the most successful moment of the great celebration.

B. Shaw’s wonderful and democratic plot, ironical allusion and social eclectics of mythological “Pygmalion” regarded one another on the Georgian stage with choreographic gracefulness, colourful setting and costumes, light-shadow and silhouette techniques and were accompanied by favourite melodies. Indeed, even the most critical audience had no time to have critical opinions. It was all thanks to a surprisingly dynamic, humane and friendly approach of the director.

We can say that it was a bit humble performance but all the actors put all their hearts and souls in it. And it is logical as it is the first time the theatre actors have dared to perform an English musical. It has ever happened not only on the stage of the Meskhishvili Theatre but throughout all Georgia. Furthermore, do not forget that the first witnesses to their performance with expectations and anxiety caused by it were Dame Rosemary Butler, the British Ambassador to Georgia – Alexandra Hall Hall and our British friends among whom was the artistic director of Cymru (the Welsh ballet). In a word, it was a difficult test for Georgian talent in front of great European culture!

We are happy that the guests’ delight about the performance overshadowed our joy. It is great that there was absolute attention on the balconies full of young people in the 800-seat hall until the very last minute of the performance.

We are glad that the performance “Pygmalion”, devoted to the 25th anniversary of Kutaisi Newport Twinning, will remain in the repertoire of our theatre and generations will be proud of it. It is also great that our very special friend Dame Rosemary Butler called it a “world premiere” and the media introduced this performance to the public using these words.

When the performance was over Dame Rosemary Butler, the British Ambassador and the Mayor of Kutaisi went onto the stage to greet the participants and express their feeling of gratitude for the hard work they had put into the performance to make it so successful. This emotional mood continued on the terrace of the Hotel Bagrati where Alexandra Hall Hall gave a great reception for all participants of this wonderful spectacle.

Our many thanks to all representatives of the Meskhishvili Theatre, to the director – Giorgi Sikharulidze and to the head of the theatre – Sulkhan Gogolashvili who did their utmost to stage such a performance which we, all members of the KNIA had dreamed of with a feeling of some fear months ago.

Importantly, we all know that nothing is lost in the long-lasting history of Kutaisi Newport friendship and, naturally, a long road of success lies ahead of our “Pygmalion” with that “mark of happiness” which it has gained thanks to the Kutaisi Newport jubilee.

“Kutaisi had a great theatrical tradition. It didn’t only mean that we had our particular artistic aestheticism. It meant generally the artistic taste, and aspiration of the Kutaisi community for the classic with its characteristic mood and tone refinement, literature values and civic culture. And... today I’ve seen the new generation of “Pygmalion” - a new Kutaisi! The performance was academic and theatrical, with more interesting new traditions which can be treated as perfect modernization of the past! I’ve seen that Kutaisi which I’ve always wished to see as a true Georgian city of our future!” Says member of Venice Committee, Professor Mindia Ugrekhelidze, a native of Kutaisi.
