ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის მოწვევით ქუთაისის აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტში აპრილის თვეში სტუმრად იმყოფებოდნენ ნიუ მექსიკოს უნივერსიტეტის ინგლისური და ამერიკული ლიტერატურის პროფესორები ჯეიმს და კონი თორსონები.

ფულბრაიტელ მკვლევარს, პროფესორ ჯეიმს თორსონს, მრავალი სამეცნიერო სტატიებისა და წიგნების ავტორს, გერმანიის სამი უნივერსიტეტის მოწვეულ პროფესორს, თანამედროვე ენის ასოციაციის პუბლიკაციათა რედკოლეგიის კონსულტანტს (PMLA), მსოფლიოს ოცდაათზე მეტ უნივერსიტეტში ლექციები აქვს წაკითხული. ყოველივე ამის გათვალისწინებით, ჩვენთვის განსაკუთრებით სასიხარულოა ამ ადამიანის დიდი ინტერესი საქართველოსადმი, ჩვენი ქვეყნის ისტორიის, კულტურისა და ლიტერატურისადმი. საქართველოში ჩამოსვლამდე პროფესორი ჯეიმს თორსონი გაეცნო ცნობილი ქართველი მწერლებისა და პოეტების შემოქმედებას. მისი აღფრთოვანება გამოიწვია იმან, თუ რაოდენ დიდი სიყვარულითა და პატივისცემით სარგებლობენ ეს უკანასკნელნი ჩვენს ქვეყანაში და გაოცებით აღნიშნა, რომ საქართველოში ამა თუ იმ შემოქმედის სახელის თქმაც კი საკმარისია (გვარის მითითების გარეშე), რომ ყველა ხვდებოდეს ვის შესახებაა საუბარი. ის განსაკუთრებით მოხიბლა ჩვენმა ტრადიციამ, რომ ქუჩებს, სკოლებსა და უნივერსიტეტებს მწერალთა და პოეტთა საპატივცემულოდ ვურჩევთ სახელებს.

სტუმრობის პირველი კვირის განმავლობაში პროფესორმა ჯაიმს თორსონმა წაიკითხა ლექციების ციკლი ადგილობრივი ამერიკელი (ინდიელი) მწერლების შემოქმედებაძე, მათ რომანებსა და პოეზიაზე. ეს ლიტერატურული მოძრაობა, რომელიც მსოფლიო ლიტერატურათმცოდნეობაში მოიხსენიება სახელწოდებით ”ინდიელთა რენესანსი” და სათავეს იღებს XX საუკუნის 60-იანი წლებიდან, ნაკლებადაა ცნობილი ქართველ მკითხველთა და მკვლევართათვის. პროფესორმა თორსონმა ქართველ მსმენელს გააცნო ლესლი სილკოს, სკოტ მომადეის, ჯაიმს უელჩისა შემოქმედება (Leslie Marmon Silko, Navarre Scott Momaday, James Welch). სილკოს მოთხრობებსა და პოეზიაზე აგრეთვე ჩატარდა სასემინარო-პრაქტიკული მუშაობა სტუდენტებთან. ჩვენი სტუმარი კმაყოფილი დარჩა სტუდენტთა აქტივობა-ჩართულობით და იმით, რომ თუ როგორ შეძლეს მათ სრულიად განსხვავებული კულტურის, ტრადიციებისა და ლიტერატურის გაგება. იმავე კვირაში ჩატარდა ლექცია დოქტორანტებისა და მაგისტრებისათვის სხვადასხვა ლიტერატურულ სკოლებზე, სადაც განხილული იქნა, როგორც ტრადიციული, ასევე თანამედროვე სკოლების თეორიული მიდგომები.

მეორე კვირაში ლექტორ-მასწავლებლებს მიეცათ საშუალება მოესმინათ საინტერესო ლექცია-სემინარი ლიტერატურის სწავლების მეთოდებზე, სადაც პროფესორმა თორსონმა გაგვიზიარა თავისი საინტერესო მოსაზრებები, თუ როგორ და რა უნდა იკითხებოდეს, სასწავლო კურსში, ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის შესავალში. შემდგომ ისევ სტუდენტებს წაეკითხათ ლექცია ცნობილ ამერიკელ მწერალ კურტ ვონეგუტზე და ჩაუტარდათ სემინარი მის მოთხრობებზე ”ადამი” და ”D.P.” კვირის ბოლოს გველოდა სასიამოვნო სიურპრიზი - ჩვენმა სტუმარმა წარმოგვიდგინა თავისი ხედვა ნოდარ დუმბაძის პიროვნებასა და შემოქმედებაზე. ქართველი მწერლის პიროვნებაში პროფესორ თორსონს განსაკუთრებით ხიბლავს ის ფაქტი, რომ მიუხედავად საბჭოთა კავშირის შემზღუდველ გარემოში ცხოვრებისა და მოღვაწეობის, ამ, მწერალმა შეინარჩუნა ქართული სული და ლაღი იუმორი.

საპატიო სტუმრები აგრეთვე ეწვივნენ ბათუმის უნივერსიტეტს, სადაც პროფ. თორსონმა სტუდენტებისა და ლექტორ-მასწავლებლების თხოვნით ჩაატარა უაღრესად საინტერესო ლექცია ლიტერატურის სწავლების მეთოდების შესახებ.

აპრილის ორი კვირა ძალზე ნაყოფიერი და მრავლისმომცემი აღმოჩნდა როგორც ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის სტუდენტებისთვის, ასევე ლექტორ-მასწავლებლებისთვის. ჩვენ მოგვეცა საშუალება გავცნობოდით თანამედროვე ლიტერატურულ პროცესებსა და ლიტერატრურის სწავლების ახალ მეთოდებს. ამავდროულად, გვქონდა ბედნიერება გვესაუბრა საოცრად განათლებულ და ნიჭიერ ადამიანებთან, რომლებიც ხალისით გვიზიარებდნენ თავიანთ გამოცდილებას.

Fulbright Professor James Thorson, an outstanding Educator of America, author of many books and articles, editorial consultant to Publications of the Modern Language Association (PMLA) at present is a visiting Professor of some Universities of Germany. He has taught at more than thirty Universities in different countries of the world. We were delighted to know that such a distinguished scholar got very interested in Georgia, our history culture and literature. Before coming to Georgia Professor James Thorson read and seriously studied some works of Georgian literature and was greatly impressed with the way our writers and poets are respected and loved in their country.He was amazed that Georgians often lovely call their favorite writers just by their first names but everyone knows at once who is spoken about. He also liked our tradition to name streets, squares, schools and Universities after famous Georgian writers.

During the first week of his stay in Kutaisi Professor Thorson gave some lectures on Native American Literature, its main representatives and their works. This interesting literary tendency which began to develop in the 60s of XX century and known as “ The Native American Renaissance” in literary theory is little known to Georgian readers and scholars. Our guest introduced the life and works of Indian writers Leslie Marmon Silko, Navarre Scott Momaday, James Welch to his Georgian colleagues and student and also conducted a seminar on Native American poetry and the short story “The Man to Send Rain Clouds” by Leslie Marmon Silko. The professor was pleased with our students’ active participation in the seminar and appreciated their ability to understand absolutely new literature, culture and traditions. On Friday there was also a lecture “Some Coordinates of Literary (and Art) Criticism with Thanks and Apologies to Professor M. H. Abrams” for graduate students on research and criticism. It was a very interesting and educative lecture on traditional and modern critical approaches to literature.

The next week teachers of literature had a good opportunity to listen to the lecture on “Teaching Literature to Students of English” during which the Professor shared his ideas on Introduction to the Professional Study of English. There was also a lecture for students on the life and works of the famous American writer Kurt Vonnegut which was followed by a seminar on the writer’s thought-provoking stories “Adam” and “D.P”. At the end of that week our guest prepared a surprise for us when he shared his thoughts and ideas about the personality and works of our writer Nodar Dumbadze. He emphasized the fact that despite the Soviet reality Nodar Dumbadze preserved Georgian spirit and kind unique Georgian humour.

The guests of honor also visited Batumi University where Professor Thorson at the request of the staff and students delivered a lecture “Teaching Literature to Students of English”.

Two weeks in April were very fruitful and beneficial for students and teachers of the Department of English Philology. We had a great opportunity to get updated to current literary processes and modern approaches to literature and to talk to very educated and broad-minded people who were glad to share their unique experience and knowledge with us with great pleasure.

It’s a great honor for us that the Department of English Philology and the Kutaisi-Newport Twinning Association now have such very special and dear friends as James and Connie Thorson.

ჰუმანიტარულ მეცნიერებათა ფაკულტეტზე არსებულ ინგლისური ენის კლუბს არსებობის 45 წლის ისტორია აქვს. წლების განმავლობაში ამ კლუბის თაოსნობით იმართებოდა ღონისძიებები ნიჭიერი სტუდენტების წარმოსაჩენად და სტუდენტურ ცხოვრებაში სიხალისის შესატანად. გამონაკლისი არც წლევანდელი წელი აღმოჩნდა. ამერიკელი სტუმრების საპატივცემულოდ English Speaking Club-ის კიდევ ერთი დაუვიწყარი საღამო გაიმართა.

ამჯერად ინგლისური ენის კლუბმა ნიუ-მექსიკის უნივერსიტეტის პროფესორ-ემერეტუს დოქტორ თორსონს და მის მეუღლეს უმასპინძლა. პრ. ჯეიმს თორსონი ორი კვირის განმავლობაში კითხულობდა ლექციებს ლიტერატურათმცოდნეობაში. ბოლო ლექცია სიმბოლურად ქართულ ლიტერატურას და კონკრეტულად, ნოდარ დუმბაძის შემოქმედებას ეძღვნებოდა. დოქტორმა თორსონმა დუმბაძის შემოქმედების ღრმა და საფუძვლიანი ცოდნა გამოამჟღავნა, რამაც დიდი ინტერესი და აუდიტორიის მაღალი შეფასება დაიმსახურა. სტუმართა რიცხვში ასევე შედიოდნენ მარკ სკალი და გარი ე. გეილი, რომლებიც წერეთლის უნივერსიტეტში უკვე ორი თვეა ლექციებს ატარებენ.

სტუდენტები დიდი ინტერესით შეხვდნენ ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის ინიციატივას. განსაკუთრებით აქტიურობდნენ პირველკურსელები, რადგან მათთვის ეს პირველი ღონისძიება იყო აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტში და სურდათ სტუმრებზე კარგი შთაბეჭდილება მოეხდინათ. ღონისძიებაში მონაწილეობა მიიღეს როგორც ინგლისური ენა და ლიტერატურის სპეციალობის სტუდენტებმა, ასევე სამედიცინო ფაკულტეტის სტუდენტებმაც.

პირველკურსელებმა შეასრულეს რამდენიმე ინგლისურენოვანი სიმღერა და წარმოადგინეს უცხოური ცეკვა, რომელმაც მაყურებლში განსაკუთრებული ოვაცია გამოიწვია. სამედიცინო ფაკულტეტის სტუდენტებმა იუმორისტული ხასიათის სკეტჩები წარმოადგინეს და ძირითადად ექიმებზე ხუმრობდნენ. გაცვლითი პროგრამების სტუდენტებმა თავიანთ გამოცდილებაზე ისაუბრეს ამერიკასა თუ ევროპაში. ერთ-ერთმა მეოთხე კურსელმა საკუთარი კომპოზიციაც კი შემოგვთავაზა, რამაც დიდი მოწონება დაიმსახურა.

საღამოს დასასრულს ამერიკელ სტუმრებს გადაეცათ ტესტები ქუთაისის შესახებ. ყველა მათგანმა მაქსიმალური შეფასება მიიღო. შეკითხვას ისურვებდნენ თუ არა ქუთაისში ცხოვრებას, ისინი ერთხმად დათანხმდნენ. სტუმრებმა აღიარეს, რომ სტუდენტურ კლუბში შეხვედრა გრანდიოზული იყო. თითოეულმა მათგანმა დიდი სიყვარული გამოხატა საქართველოსა და ქართველი ხალხის მიმართ. მარკ სკალმა თავისი სიტყვა ქართულადაც კი წარმოთქვა, რამაც მაყურებლის აღფრთოვანება გამოიწვია.

კლუბის წარმატებული ღონისძიება უნივერსიტეტის რექტორმა პროფ. გიორგი ღავთაძემ შეაჯამა. მან ინგლისურ ენაზე მიმართა კლუბის წევრებსა და ამერიკელ სტუმრებს. მისმა სიტყვამ აუდიტორიაზე დიდი შთაბეჭდილება მოახდინა.

ინგლისური ენის კლუბის ღონისძიებამ წარმატებით ჩაიარა. მონაწილე სტუდენტებს იმდენად მოეწონათ ეს საღამო, რომ ახალი ღონისძიების ორგანიზებაზე დაიწყეს ფიქრი. ხოლო ვინც მონაწილეობა არ მიიღო, დიდ სინაულს გამოთქვამდა ამის გამო.

მინდა ღონისძიებაში მონაწილე ყველა სტუდენტის სახელით მადლობა გადავუხადო ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტსა და ენათა ცენტრს, რომ საშუალება მოგვეცა საკუთარი ნიჭი გამოგვევლინა და მრავალმხრივ წარმოგვეჩინა საკუთარი თავი პროფესორ-მასწავლებელთა წინაშე.

English Speaking club of the faculty of Humanities has a long history of 45 years. This club has organised many events in order to discover talented students and bring cheerfulness to student life. This year wasn't an exception either - an unforgettable event (evening) was held in honour of the American guests.

This time English Speaking Club hosted Prof. Dr. Thorson and his wife from New Mexico University. Prof. James Thorson gave lectures in literature studies. The last lecture was dedicated to Georgian literature, namely to Nodar Dumbadze's creative works. Dr. Thorson showed a deep knowledge in Dumbadze's works getting a big interest and high evaluation from the audience. Mark Scully and Gary Gail were among guests, who have been giving lectures at Tsereteli State University for a month.

Students were highly interested in the intiative of the Philology of English Department. Freshmen were especially active as it was their first performance at Akaki Tsereteli State University and they wanted to leave a good impression on the guests. Not only the students of the faculty of Humanities participated in the event, but also the students of the faculty of medicine.

The first year students sang several English songs and performed a foreign dance that caused a long ovation in the audience. The students of the Faculty of Medicine performed humorous sketches and spoke jokes mainly about doctors. The students participating in exchange programs shared their experience about America and Europe. One fourth year student played his own composition that was highly appreciated by the audience.

At the end of the event the American guests were given a quiz about Kutaisi. All of them got the highest points. One of the questions was whether they would like to live in Kutaisi or not. All of the guests agreed on this offer. The guests admitted that the English Speaking Club meeting was grand and brilliant. Each of them showed great affection for Georgia and Georgian people. Markus Scully made a speech in Georgian and the audience found his Georgian fascinating.

The rector, Giorgi Gavtadze evaluated the event. He expressed his gratitude towards the Department of English Philology and he referred to the American guests in English. His speech was impressive.

The English speaking club event made a success. The students participating in the performance liked the event so much that they straightaway started thinking about organising a new meeting. And those who didn’t get a chance to take part in the event were willing to participate in it next year.

I want to thank on behalf of the students the Department of English philology and the language center for giving us a chance to show our talent to our professors.

Dear Newsletter Readers,

Friendship, fellowship, and freedom are sound building blocks for a relationship that has stood the test of time. Kutaisi and Newport have been fortunate to establish a mutually satisfying regard that is approaching 25 years of strength through understanding and respect.

We, too, are fortunate to have become friends with many faculty and students of English literature and language at Akaki Tseriteli University in Kutaisi. Being the happy recipients of Georgian hospitality for two of the most remarkable weeks we have ever had makes us realize that the relationship that has blossomed over the years between Kutaisi and Newport is certainly not a surprise.

Georgian generosity allowed us to travel to such lovely, awe-inspiring places as Gelati, Motsameta, Sataplia, and more accompanied by new friends. We enjoyed the delights of a Georgian feast in Vani, sitting outside under the trees on a beautiful spring day. Who could ask for anything better from life?

The lectures Jim gave were received with interest and appreciation. The classes served as introductions to some new materials for the students. Both faculty and students were generous with their time and were always glad to see us. We felt at home. The farewell Supra, complete with an eloquent tamada and many toasts, at the Old Oak was a feast freely shared with love.

We cannot thank Professor Madonna Megrelishvili and Dr. Tamriko Kobeshavidze and all of their colleagues and students enough for showing us the same hospitality that has cemented Kutaisi's friendship with Newport, Wales, for nearly 25 years. There is a commitment to excellence on both sides of the academic equation that can hardly be surpassed. Georgian students at Akaki Tsereteli University are truly fortunate to have opportunities to meet and work with visitors from Wales as well as to travel to the UK on a regular and on-going basis.
