The First Meeting of the Association with Its New Honorary President

On June 12,
2018 Kutaisi Newport International Association held the first meeting with its new Honorary President - the newly elected Mayor of the Municipality of Kutaisi Mr. Giorgi Chighvaria.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere full of warm and special emotions.
Mr. Giorgi Chighvaria,
as a graduate of Akaki Tsereteli State University,
a member of its academic personnel and a politician,
has always observed the activities of the Association.
This time,
as the President of the Association,
he got more closely acquainted with the history,
aims,
objectives,
activities,
future prospects and active members of the Association.
The meeting was opened by the Chair of the Association Professor Madonna Megrelishvili,
who congratulated the Mayor on becoming the President of the Association widely known for its outstanding traditions and wished him success in his future activities.
Professor Madonna Megrelishvili emphasized the fact that amid the difficult and controversial process of globalization in the contemporary world,
throughout the three decades of its existence Kutaisi Newport International Association was able to meet a major challenge faced by our country – to introduce and maintain only the best European values and experience in the Georgian reality.
The Association,
which has no analogues in its significance and the projects it has implemented,
was declared to be an international model of friendship by the Twin Cities Assembly in Paris.
This exemplary friendship has contributed to further maintenance of the links between the two nations - Georgia and Britain.
2018 წლის 12 ივნისს ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციამ პირველი შეხვედრა გამართა თავის ახალ საპატიო პრეზიდენტთან - ქუთაისის ახლად არჩეულ მუნიციპალიტეტის მერთან,
გიორგი ჭიღვარიასთან.
შეხვედრა უაღრესად თბილი და განსაკუთრებული ემოციებით სავსე ატმოსფეროში წარიმართა.
ბატონი გიორგი ჭიღვარია,
როგორც აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის კურსდამთავრებული,
მისი აკადემიური პერსონალის წევრი და პოლიტიკოსი,
ყოველთვის აქტიურად ადევნებდა თვალს ასოციაციის საქმიანობას.
ამჯერად იგი,
როგორც ასოციაციის პრეზიდენტი,
უშუალოდ და კიდევ უფრო ახლოს გაეცნო მის ისტორიას,
მიზნებს,

რომელმაც გულითადად მიულოცა ქალაქის მერს სახელოვანი ტრადიციებით გამორჩეული ასოციაციის პრეზიდენტობა და უსურვა წარმატება სამომავლო საქმიანობაში.
ქალბატონმა მადონამ ხაზი გაუსვა იმ გარემოებას,
რომ თანამედროვე მსოფლიოში მიმდინარე გლობალიზაციის რთული და წინააღმდეგობრივი პროცესის ფონზე,
თავისი არსებობის სამი ათეული წლის მანძილზე ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციამ შეძლო,
ღირსეულად მიეღო ჩვენი ქვეყნის წინაშე არსებული უმთავრესი გამოწვევა - ქართული რეალობა ეზიარებინა მხოლოდ საუკეთესო ევროპული ღირებულებებისა და გამოცდილებისათვის.
ასოციაცია,
რომელიც უალტერნატივოა თავისი მნიშვნელობით და განხორციელებული პროექტების მასშტაბით,
პარიზში მსოფლიოს დამეგობრებულ ქალაქთა ასამბლეამ მეგობრობის საერთაშორისო მოდელად აღიარა.
ეს სამაგალითო ურთიერთობა დიდი ხანია გასცდა ორი ქალაქის ფარგლებს და საფუძვლად დაედო საქართველოსა და ბრიტანეთს შორის არსებული კავშირის კიდევ უფრო განმტკიცებას.
After the speech of the Chair of the Association, the Deputy Chair - Associate Professor Nino Nizharadze and the Responsible Secretary - Associate Professor Maya Alavidze made a detailed presentation on the history of the Association. In 1989 the Agreement of Friendship signed between Kutaisi and the City of Newport was the first official international document of the city of Kutaisi. The chairs of the Associations set up on the basis of this agreement – the dedicated and highly motivated partners – Dame Rosemary Butler and Professor Madonna Megrelishvili started a new special stage of the shared history of Georgia and Wales. During the presentation it was emphasized that each new event in the history of the Association has been a breakthrough in terms of maintenance of the links between the two cities and the two nations and deserves particular attention.
ასოციაციის თავმჯდომარის შესავალი სიტყვის შემდეგ მისმა მოადგილემ, ასოცირებულმა პროფესორმა ნინო ნიჟარაძემ და პასუხისმგებელმა მდივანმა, ასოცირებულმა პროფესორმა მაია ალავიძემ ქალაქის მერს და დამსწრე საზოგადოებას დაწვრილებით გააცნეს ასოციაციის საქმიანობა მისი დაარსებიდან დღემდე. 1989 წელს ქუთაისსა და ნიუპორტს შორის დადებული მეგობრობის ხელშეკრულება იყო ქუთაისის პირველი ოფიციალური საერთაშორისო დოკუმენტი. მის საფუძველზე შექმნილი ასოციაციების თავმჯდომარეების - გამორჩეული ინტელექტის, ენერგიის, გაბედულებისა და რეპუტაციის ქალბატონების - დამა როზმარი ბატლერისა და პროფესორ მადონა მეგრელიშვილის ხელმძღვანელობით დაიწყო ქართულ-ბრიტანული ერთობლივი ბიოგრაფიის სრულიად ახალი, განსაკუთრებული ეტაპი. პრეზენტაციის მსვლელობისას ხაზგასმით აღინიშნა, რომ ყოველი ახალი მოვლენა ასოციაციის ისტორიაში იყო უაღრესად მნიშვნელოვანი წინგადადგმული ნაბიჯი ორი ქალაქისა და ორი ქვეყნის ურთიერთობის განმტკიცების გზაზე და თითოეული მათგანი საგანგებო ყურადღებას იმსახურებს.
The financial,
informative or knowhow support Newport has given to Kutaisi in absolutely every field throughout the past three decades is immensely valuable: training sessions and master classes,
specific reforms and grants based on the city priorities,
free training of the staff;
invitations to the representatives from the fields of business,
tourism,
health care and education;
support for talented students;
large scale projects aimed at the popularization of the Georgian culture: Georgian libraries in Wales,
exhibitions,
concerts,
poetry evenings;
special reports from the British friends,
magazines and newspapers;
celebrations of the anniversaries of the Association;
the opening of Newport Street in Kutaisi and Kutaisi Walk in Newport,
etc.
After the interesting presentation,
the member of the Association,
Associate Professor Natia Zviadadze read a letter sent by the Honorary Citizens of Kutaisi – Dame Rosemary Butler and Professor Derek Butler to the Mayor and people of Kutaisi.
The Welsh friends send Kutaisi people their best wishes for Kutaisi Day 2018,
congratulate the Mayor on his victory in the recent elections and wish him a happy and successful term of office.
They point out that the bonds between our two cities,
and Wales and Georgia,
are strong – and will be further strengthened by the introduction of the direct air route between Kutaisi and Luton airport,
London,
which was initiated last June.
Dame Rosemary Butler and Derek Butler are confident that the newly elected Mayor of Kutaisi will give the twinning his strongest support (see below).

The future plans and prospects of the Association were introduced to the Mayor by the Committee Head of PR and Creative Projects – Zeko Khachidze.
ბატონ გიორგი ჭიღვარიას ასოციაციის სამომავლო გეგმები და პერსპექტივები გააცნო ქნია-ს საზოგადოებასთან ურთიერთობისა და კრეატიული პროექტების კომისიის თავმჯდომარემ ზეკო ხაჩიძემ.
One of the most emotional moments of the meeting was awarding a certificate of appreciation to the Head of the Culture Committee of the Association, Order of Honour recipient, Honorary Citizen of Kutaisi and prominent pianist - Professor Tsitsino Todua for her 70th birthday. The Mayor of the city awarded her the certificate for her long-lasting productive teaching activity and the important contribution she has made to the development of the Georgian musical culture. The member of the Association, Associate Professor Ekaterine Archvadze read an emotional letter to Professor Tsitsino Todua by Dame Rosemary Butler and Professor Derek Butler, who have been close friends of Professor Tsitsino Todua for many years and their friendship is built on the enjoyment of each other’s company and a shared love of great music.
შეხვედრის ერთ-ერთ ყველაზე ემოციურ მომენტს წარმოადგენდა ასოციაციის კულტურული მიმართულების ხელმძღვანელის, ღირსების ორდენოსანის, ქუთაისის საპატიო მოქალაქისა და უნიჭიერესი პიანისტის, პროფესორ ციცინო თოდუასთვის სერთიფიკატის გადაცემა მისი 70 წლის იუბილესთან დაკავშირებით. მრავალწლოვანი ნაყოფიერი პედაგოგიური მოღვაწეობისა და ქართული მუსიკალური კულტურის განვითარებაში შეტანილი მნიშვნელოვანი წვლილისათვის მას ქალაქის მერმა გადასცა საპატიო სერთიფიკატი, ასოციაციის წევრმა ასოცირებულმა პროფესორმა ეკატერინე არჩვაძემ კი დამსწრე საზოგადოებას გააცნო დამა როზმარი ბატლერისა და პროფესორ დერექ ბატლერის ემოციური წერილი იუბილარისადმი, რომელშიც ისინი აღნიშნავენ, რომ ქალბატონ ციცინოსთან ფასდაუდებელი, ურთიერთპატივისცემასა და მუსიკისადმი უსაზღვრო სიყვარულზე დაფუძნებული მეგობრობა აკავშირებთ.
Assistant Professor Zinaida Chachanidze, a member of the association, informed the members of the Association of another interesting event in the musical life of Kutaisi: the BBC is preparing a programme about the polyphonic music and is planning to cooperate with the Georgian polyphonic choir led by Irine Lominadze. The choir has been strongly recommended by Professor Derek Butler, who first listened to the choir three years ago at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the friendship between Kutaisi and Newport organized by the British Embassy, during which the choir impressed the audience with a marvelous performance. It is obvious that this project will contribute to further international recognition of the Georgian musical culture.
ქუთაისის მუსიკალური სამყაროს სიახლეების თემა ასოციაციის წევრმა ასისტენტ პროფესორმა, ზინაიდა ჩაჩანიძემ განაგრძო, რომელმაც ასოციაციის წევრებს აცნობა, რომ ტელეკომპანია ბი-ბი-სი ამზადებს პროგრამას ქართული მრავალხმიანი მუსიკის შესახებ და გეგმავს თანამშრომლობას მაღალი დონის პროფესიონალებით დაკომპლექტებულ ქართულ პოლიფონიურ გუნდთან ირინე ლომინაძის ხელმძღვანელობით. გუნდს რეკომენდაცია მისცა პროფესორმა დერექ ბატლერმა, რომელმაც მას პირველად სამი წლის წინ მოუსმინა დიდი ბრიტანეთის საელჩოს მიერ ორგანიზებულ ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის დამეგობრების 25 წლის საიუბილეო შეხვედრაზე, სადაც გუნდმა საოცარი შესრულებით წარუშლელი შთაბეჭდილება მოახდინა მსმენელზე. აშკარაა, რომ ბი-ბი-სი-ს აღნიშნული პროექტი კიდევ ერთ დიდ აღიარებას მოუტანს ქართულ მუსიკალურ კულტურას საერთაშორისო ასპარეზზე.
At the end of the meeting the Mayor of Kutaisi thanked the members of the Association for the detailed and interesting presentation of their aims, activities and future plans. He emphasized that being the President of Kutaisi Newport International Association is a great honour and responsibility and expressed readiness to enthusiastically apply all the opportunities and resources available to him for the benefit of the Association.

The bonds between our two cities, and Wales and Georgia, are strong – and will be further strengthened by the introduction of the direct air route between Kutaisi and Luton airport, London, which was initiated last June. As a result it will be far easier for the people of Western Georgia and Wales to visit each other for leisure and business purposes.
Last June we had the pleasure of welcoming the previous Mayor of Kutaisi and senior council colleagues to Newport after they travelled to London on the first direct flight. The Mayor came to Newport for discussions with the Mayor of Newport, the Council Leader and senior sports administrators. Happily, the visit resulted in the renewal of contact between the Newport and Kutaisi Rugby Clubs, a partnership that dates back to the earliest days of the twinning of our two cities. Other links between our two cities, and between Wales and Georgia, continue to flourish and we are confident that you, like all esteemed past Mayors of Kutaisi, will give the twinning your very strongest support.

Mr. Mayor, First of all, I would like to express my gratitude for invitating me to this meeting. I am proud to be among the people and be a part of the Association projects that are always associated with success. It is noteworthy that this is not a success of just one social or professional group of people with common interest and capabilities. It means the success of the city and the country, as well as an international success and recognition! I am really lucky to be a part of the Association activities. I am happy to work with the person who has always been an example for me, especially when I think about her biography, courage, progressivity, and incomparable professionalism.
მინდა მადლობა მოგახსენოთ აქ მოწვევისთვის. მეამაყება, რომ იმ ადამიანების გვერდით ვდგავარ და იმ პროექტების ნაწილი ვარ, რომელიც ყოველთვის წარმატებასთან ასოცირდება. უმთავრესი არის ის, რომ ეს წარმატება არ არის ერთი სოციალური, ან პროფესიული ჯგუფის, მხოლოდ საერთო ინტერესის ან საერთო შესაძლებლობების მქონე ადამიანების, არამედ ის ყოველთვის ქალაქის და ქვეყნის წარმატებას გულისხმობს. თანაც საერთაშორისო წარმატებას და აღიარებას! იშვიათია ასეთი მოღვაწეობა და ფუფუნების ტოლფასი, პრაქტიკულად. ბედნიერი ვარ, რომ იმ ადამიანთან მიწევს იდეური თანხვედრა, ვინც ჩემთვის იშვიათი მაგალითია მისი ბიოგრაფიით, მისი გამბედაობით, პროგრესულობით, შეუდარებელი პროფესიონალიზმით.

Congratulations on becoming the President of the Association uniting many prominent residents of Kutaisi,
the Association that has gained worldwide importance throughout the years of its existence.
We will have new mutually beneficial initiatives for both municipality and KNIA.
At the moment one of our initiatives is "Volunteer Consultants",
which we hope will bring a success to local self-governmental services.

Friendship between Kutaisi and Newport is Endless!!!

We have quite often heard about a long and successful friendship and cooperation between the international associations of Newport and Kutaisi.
There is no doubt that the twinning between the cities is due to enthusiasm,
commitment and mutual love of the chairs and members of the associations.
Chair of Kutaisi Newport International Association Professor Madonna Megrelishvili is not satisfied with only current success,
it is her wish the future generations,
youngsters of Newport and Kutaisi to continue and make the tradition and carefully built friendship established almost 30 years ago even stronger.
That is why Professor Madonna Megrelishvili is trying to spread information about the friendship of Newport and Kutaisi among the youth of Kutaisi and make them interested in it.
Much has already been written about the exchange programme that enable Georgian students to study in Newport and experience the British culture;
there are also frequent mutual visits during which youngsters of Newport and Kutaisi meet and enjoy the warmth and love that the chairs and members of the Newport and Kutaisi International Associations radiate.
On June 12,
the Association met the Mayor of Kutaisi Giorgi Chighvaria in a festive atmosphere.
He became the President of KNIA according to the internationally accepted provisions of the twin cities.
The new President Giorgi Chighvaria was introduced with the projects carried out during the Twinning.
Naturally,
Giorgi Chighvaria already knows well about this unique friendship,
a detailed description of the relationship between Kutaisi and Newport citizens was more intended for those young people who were attending the meeting.
The Kutaisi Newport International Association is older than many of the students,
majority of them will not even remember the cold 90's,
when the friendship between the cities was established.
That's why the history retold by the founder and members of Kutaisi International Association created a vivid picture of the difficulties these people overcame,
but they did not stop and did not give up!
On the contrary the difficulties strengthened their friendship even more!
The meeting was a success,
the young people are eager to make their own contribution to the development of relations between the cities and both Kutaisi and Newport to benefit from it.
We hope and believe that the friendship between Kutaisi and Newport is not meant to have an ending and new president of the association,
Mayor Giorgi Chighvaria will contribute to make it even stronger and more successful!
არა ერთხელ გვსმენია ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ხანგრძლივი და წარმატებული მეგობრობისა და თანამშრომლობის შესახებ.
უდავოა,
რომ ქალაქებს შორის მეგობრობა ასოციაციების ხელმძღვანელებისა და წევრების ენთუზიაზმმა,
მონდომებამ და ურთიერთსიყვარულმა განაპირობა.
ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ხელმძღვანელი პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი არ კმაყოფილდება მხოლოდ ამჟამინდელი წარმატებით,
მისი სურვილია მომავალმა თაობებმაც,
ქუთაისის და ნიუპორტისა ახალგაზრდებმა გააგრძელონ და კიდევ უფრო განამტკიცონ 29 წლის წინ დამკვიდრებული ტრადიცია და რუდუნებით აშენებული მეგობრობა.
ამის გამო,
პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი ქუთაისელ ახალგაზრდებში ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის მეგობრობის შესახებ ინფორმაციის გავრცელებას და მათ დაინტერესებას ცდილობს.
უკვე ბევრი დაიწერა იმ გაცვლითი პროგრამების შესახებ,
რომლებიც ქართველ სტუდენტებს ნიუპორტში სწავლის საშუალებას და ბრიტანულ კულტურასთან ზიარების საშუალებას აძლევს;
ხშირია ორმხრივი ვიზიტები,
რომლის დროსაც ნიუპორტელი და ქუთაისელი ახალგაზრდები ერთმანეთს ხვდებიან და ეზიარებიან იმ სითბოსა და სიყვარულს,
რომელსაც ქუთაისი - ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ხელმძღვანელები და წევრები ასხივებენ.
მ.წ. 12 ივნისს ასოციაცია საზეიმო ვითარებაში ქუთაისის მუნიციპალიტეტის მერს გიორგი ჭიღვარიას შეხვდა.
იმსჯელეს 29 წლის მანძილზე განხორციელებული პროექტების შესახებ.
ცხადია,
გიორგი ჭიღვარიას ისედაც კარგად მოეხსენება ამ უნიკალური მეგობრობის შესახებ,
ქუთაისელებისა და ნიუპორტელების ურთიერთობის დეტალური აღწერა უფრო განკუთვნილი იყო იმ ახალგაზრდებისთვის,
იმ სტუდენტებისთვის,
რომლებიც შეხვედრას ესწრებოდნენ.
ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთშორისო ასოციაცია უფროსია ბევრ მათგანზე,
სტუდენტების უმრავლესობას არ ემახსოვრება ის ცივი 90-იანი წლები,
რომლის დროსაც ქალაქებს შორის მეგობრობას ჩაეყარა საფუძველი.
ამიტომ თვითონ ქუთაისი - ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის დამფუძნებლისა და წევრების პირით მოთხრობილმა ისტორიამ სტუდენტებს ნათელი წარმოდგენა შეუქმნა იმ სირთულეების შესახებ,
რომლებიც ამ ადამიანებმა გადალახეს,
თუმცა არ გაჩერდნენ და ხელი არ ჩაიქნიეს,
პირიქით,
სირთულეები მათ მეგობრობას კიდევ უფრო აძლიერებდა!
შეხვედრამ გაამართლა,
ახალგაზრდები მოწადინებული არიან,
რომ თვითონაც შეიტანონ წვლილი ქალაქებს შორის ურთიერთობის გაღრმავებაში და ქუთაისისა და ნიპორტის ეს სასიქადულო კავშირი ორივე ქალაქის სასიკეთოდ გამოიყენონ.
იმედი გვაქვს და გვჯერა,
რომ ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის მეგობრობა მარადიულია და მის კიდევ უფრო განმტკიცებასა და წარმატებაში დიდ წვლილს ასოციაციის ახალი პრეზიდენტი,
ქალაქის მერი გიორგი ჭიღვარია შეიტანს!

On behalf of all members of the Kutaisi Newport International Association we would like to express our great gratitude to the administration and all employees of Kutaisi University.
This is the place where the Office of the Association and its English Language Centre have recently been located.
From the very first days we feel great support from the University staff.
Usually it is not so easy to move in a new place and to feel at home in it.
However,
it was absolutely painless and not difficult for us from the very beginning thanks to the pleasant environment and the people who very warmly welcomed us.
Once again,
we would like to thank you for the support and kindness that we,
the members of the Association and the English Language Centre feel every day from you.
We wish you further success in your work and we know that you will also contribute a lot to strengthening the friendship between our associations and cities.
ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ყველა წევრის სახელით გვსურს, გამოვხატოთ უდიდესი მადლიერება ქუთაისის უნივერსიტეტის ხელმძღვანელობისა და ყველა თანამშრომლის მიმართ.
ეს ის ადგილია, სადაც ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ოფისი და შესაბამისად მასთან არსებული ინგლისური ენის ცენტრი ცოტა ხნის წინ განთავსდა.
ამ შენობაში შემოსვლის პირველივე დღეებიდან ვგრძნობთ უდიდეს თანადგომასა და მხარდაჭერას უნივერსიტეტის თითოეული თანამშრომლის მხრიდან.
ცოტათი ალბათ რთულია, ძველის შემდეგ ახალ ადგილს შეეჩვიო და თავი შინაურულად იგრძნო,
თუმცა ჩვენ ეს არ გაგვჭირვებია სასმიამოვნო გარემოსა და ამ გარემოში არსებული ადამიანების წყალობით,
რომელთა კეთილგანწყობამ და ყოველდღიურმა ღიმილიანმა შეხვედრამ ეს პროცესი ათმაგად გაგვიადვილა.
კიდევ ერთხელ გიხდით მადლობას იმ სიკეთისა და კეთილგანწყობისთვის,
რასაც ჩვენ,
ასოციაციისა და ინგლისური ენის ცენტრის თანამშრომლები თქვენგან ყოველ დღიურად ვგრძნობთ.
გისურვებთ კიდევ უფრო მეტ წარმატებასა და წინსვლას.
სამომავლოდ თქვენ იქნებით კიდევ ერთი მყარი აგურის დამდები ჩვენს ასოციაციებსა და ქალაქებს შორის არსებული წარმატებული მეგობრობის კიდევ უფრო განმტკიცების საქმეში.
