This edition of the newsletter is dedicated to the visit to Kutaisi by John Pijanowski,
Professor of the University of Arkansas who joined ATSU for three months to share his invaluable experience with staff and students.
He has given great service to our University in the short time he has spent with us and made a great contribution to ensuring the quality of education provided at the university.
It’s rewarding to know how much the University gained from his experience.
The Department of English Philology was especially delighted to welcome John,
because he is also very special to us on the personal level.
Last year he married and started a family life with Kate Mamiseishvili,
a brilliant graduate,
a staff member of this Department and our devoted friend,
currently a Professor,
Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the University of Arkansas after doing her Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the University of Missouri,
Columbia.
Some of us enjoyed greatly their wedding reception held in Kutaisi last July.
Now we are glad to see a happy smile on John’s face when we sometimes joke affectionately calling him our son and brother-in-law.
ჟურნალის ეს ნომერი ეძღვნება არკანზასის უნივერსიტეტის პროფესორის ჯონ პიანოვსკის ვიზიტს ქუთაისში,
რომელიც სამი თვის განმავლობაში მუშაობდა აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტში,
რათა თავისი შეუფასებელი გამოცდილება გაეზიარებინა უნივერსიტეტის აკადემიური პერსონალისა და სტუდენტებისათვის.

John and Kate have a very lovely son Jack who was also visiting Kutaisi with his father.
He didn’t waste time attending a Georgian school where he made many good friends who taught him Georgian.

Professor John Pijanowski came to Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) as a Fulbright scholar and he could not have come at a more decisive moment in our University’s life. His stay here has coincided with the period of preparation for institutional authorisation at ATSU and from day one John has been very actively involved in the process. With his impressive educational background (undergraduate degree in Psychology from Brown University, Master’s and doctoral degrees in Educational Foundations from Cornell University) and wealth of academic and administrative experience (at different times he served as the chair of the Faculty Senate, the Teaching Academy President and currently he is the Director of Teaching and Faculty Support Center) at the University of Arkansas, he has been the best advisor, consultant, source of information and guide ATSU could have wished for. John has worked closely with the university administration and Quality Assurance Service getting acquainted with the state affairs at ATSU and sharing his expertise, in particular in the field of research policy development. So, he will be one of the first people to hear the news and receive our heartfelt gratitude when (not if) ATSU successfully completes the authorisation process in about a month’s time.

Even with his busy schedule John found time for students and staff of English Philology Department (EPD).
He gave a very informative seminar on academic research methods and practices for the academic staff of EPD.
The information he shared is particularly valuable as we are still exploring the ways of closer cooperation with the international academic community.
However,
what John seems to have enjoyed the most is regular meetings with English language and literature students,
which gave him a chance to get to know Georgian young people,
their thoughts and interests better.
These meetings were structured as informal discussions on a wide variety of topics ranging from Shakespeare to student walkout in the US and allowed the students to build their confidence and benefit from a contact with a wonderful teacher and educator,
who,
incidentally,
was also a native speaker.
John's friendship and help is highly appreciated by everyone at EPD and we can only join our students in wishing that he could stay longer.

პროფესორ ჯონ პიანოვსკის დახმარება და მეგობრობა ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტისთვის უაღრესად მნიშვნელოვანია. აკადემიური პერსონალისა და ჩვენი სტუდენტების საერთო სურვილია,
მას კიდევ მეტი ხნით შეეძლოს საქართველოში დარჩენა.

Moral Mind in Action

On May 14, Professor John Pijanowski conducted a very interesting public lecture “Moral Mind in Action”. The lecture was attended not only by English Language and Literature students but also by the academic personnel of the English Philology Department. It means that the topic of the lecture was equally interesting and useful for different generations. John talked about morality, how it affects human behavior, attitude to others, daily actions, life in general and people’s world outlook. John made interesting parallels between how American and Georgian citizens understand morality and gave funny examples from his own life.
მ/წ 14 მაისს, აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის მწვანე დარბაზში ჩატარდა პროფესორ ჯონ პიანოვსკის უაღრესად საინტერესო საჯარო ლექცია თემაზე: „მორალური აზროვნება მოქმედებაში“(“Moral Mind in Action”). ლექციას ესწრებოდნენ არა მხოლოდ ინგლისური ენისა და ლიტერატურის სპეციალობის ყველა კურსის სტუდენტები, არამედ ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის აკადემიური პერსონალიც. ეს იმას ნიშნავს, რომ ლექციის თემატიკა ერთნაირად საინტერესო და საჭირო იყო სხვადასხვა თაობის წარმომადგენლებისთვის. ჯონმა ისაუბრა მორალზე, მის გამოვლინებაზე ადამიანის ქცევაში, სხვების მიმართ დამოკიდებულებაში, ყოველდღიურ საქმიანობაში, ზოგადად ცხოვრებაში და ადამიანის მსოფლმხედველობაში. ჯონმა ძალიან საინტერესო პარალელები გაავლო, როგორ ესმით მორალი ამერიკელ და ქართველ მოქალაქეებს. რამდენიმე სახალისო მაგალითი პირადი ცხოვრებიდანაც მოიყვანა.
The lecture was very interesting,
and not only because of its contents,
it was delivered at a high level,
enriched with visual material and saturated with humour.
The interactive character of the lecture was one of the most valuable.
John managed to involve the whole audience and charged everyone with positive emotions.
We,
the academic personnel,
were especially pleased with our students as they took part in the discussion.
And it must be said John’s contribution is great as he meets them on a regular basis and helps them overcome the language barrier and develop confidence.
The one hour allotted on the lecture passed too quickly.
We hope that before John’s departure we will have at least one other chance to attend a similar lecture.
At the end of the meeting,
the Professor of English Philology Department Madonna Megrelishvili remarked that this is how lectures have to be conducted.
These are the lectures which lead to the best outcomes.
She also urged the students to make example of John Pijanowsky and become successful like John.
ლექცია არა მარტო შინაარსობრივად იყო ძალიან საინტერესო,
არამედ იგი უაღრესად მაღალ დონეზე იყო წარმოდგენილი;
გამდიდრებული ვიზუალური მასალით და გაჯერებული იუმორით.
განსაკუთრებით ღირებული იყო ლექციის ინტერაქციული ხასიათი.
ჯონმა მთელი დარბაზი თანაბრად ჩართო ლექციის მსვლელობაში და ყველა მსმენელი დადებითი ემოციით დამუხტა.
ჩვენთვის,
ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის აკადემიური პერსონალისთვის,
უაღრესად სასიხარულო იყო ის ფაქტი,
რომ სტუდენტები ჩაერთვნენ დისკუსიაში,
რაც,
ისევ და ისევ ბატონი ჯონის დამსახურებაა,
რადგანაც იგი რეგულარულად ხვდება მათ და ეხმარება ენობრივი ბარიერის გადალახვაში.
ეს სტუდენტებს მეტ თავდაჯერებულობას ჰმატებს.

Students International Conference on British, American and Georgian Cultural Studies

On 27 May,
2018 the English Philology Department held an annual international conference "British,
American and Georgian Cultural Studies" in the Green Hall of Akaki Tsereteli State University.
The participants of the conference were students of English Language and Literature and Kutaisi public school.
We must proudly admit,
that over the many years of its existence the conference on British,
American and Georgian Cultural Studies has often been attended by British and American experts.
This conference was not an exception as an Arkansas University Professor John Pijanowski was also actively involved in it.
This year’s conference was very special as it had an impressive number of participants (more than 100) and a wide range of particularly interesting papers.
The conference was opened by the Head of the English Philology Department,
Associate Professor Nino Nijaradze.
Then the participants were greeted by our special guest John Pijanowski,
who wished them good luck.
After greeting,
the conference continued its work in sections.
The themes presented by students covered a wide range of current topics and were of great interest.
They talked about the similarities and differences in the life of young generation and discussed modern issues which are the main characteristics of our youth.
They revealed their deep knowledge and individual approach to the English Language and perfect use of all language skills.
Students also emphasized the positive and negative sides of using the modern technology.
It is worth mentioning that participants themselves used modern technology well and also had colorful and informatively correct compiled posters.
After each presentation there were very interesting questions to which the participants gave right and comprehensive explanations.
The participants of the conference were assessed by Professor John Pijanowski and the staff of the English Philology Department.
At the end of the conference the chairs of sections summarized the results and the participants who were given the highest assessment,
were awarded corresponding certificates and presents.

ამერიკული და ქართული კულტურათაშორისი ნარკვევები",
რომელშიც მონაწილეობა მიიღეს აწსუ-ს ინგლისური ენისა და ლიტერატურის სპეციალობის სტუდენტებმა და ქუთაისის საჯარო სკოლების მოსწავლეებმა.
სიამაყით მინდა აღვნიშნო,
რომ კონფერენციის მრავალწლიანი არსებობის მანძილზე მის მუშაობაში არა ერთ ბრიტანელ თუ ამერიკელ ექსპერტს მიუღია მონაწილეობა.
ამ მხრივ,
არც წლევანდელი კონფერენცია იყო გამონაკლისი.

კონფერენციამ მუშაობა განაგრძო სექციების მიხედვით.
სტუდენტთა და მოსწავლეთა მიერ წარმოდგენილი თემატიკა მეტად მრავალფეროვანი და საინტერესო იყო.
მათ ისაუბრეს იმ მსგავსება-განსხვავებებზე და იმ აქტუალურ საკითხებზე,
რომლებიც დამახასიათებელია დღევანდელი საზოგადოებისათვის და განსაკუთრებით,
ახალგაზრდებისათვის.
მომხსენებლებმა გამოავლინეს ინგლისური ენის საფუძვლიანი ცოდნა და ენის ფლობის საოცარი უნარი.
ხაზი გაუსვეს თანამედროვე ტექნიკის გამოყენების დადებით და უარყოფით მხარეებს.
განსაკუთრებით აღსანიშნავია ის ფაქტი,
რომ კონფერენციის მონაწილეები შესანიშნავად იყენებდნენ თანამედროვე საშუალებებს და აგრეთვე,
საკმაოდ მრავალფეროვან და ინფორმაციულად სწორად შედგენილ პოსტერებს.
თითოეული მოხსენების შემდეგ იყო საინტერესო შეკითხვები,
რომლებზედაც მონაწილეები საკმაოდ ამომწურავად პასუხობდნენ.
კონფერენციის მონაწილე სტუდენტები და მოსწავლეები შეაფასეს ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის აკადემიურმა პერსონალმა და მოწვეულმა სტუმარმა პროფესორმა ჯონ პიანოვსკიმ.
კონფერენციის დასასრულს სექციის ხელმძღვანელებმა შეაჯამეს შედეგები და მონაწილეები,
რომლებმაც უმაღლესი შეფასება დაიმსახურეს,
დაჯილდოვდნენ შესაბამისი სერთიფიკატებითა და საჩუქრებით.
The first prize among students went to Ketevan Sulaberidze, The second prize – Mariam Svanadze and Mariam Sulaberidze, The third prize – Nino Tsutsumia, Mariam Oniani.

where our young generation is given all opportunities just not only to master the language deeply,
but also be well prepared for an independent life in the modern world.
We are looking forward to the next conference.

სადაც ახალგაზრდა თაობას შესაძლებლობა ეძლევა არა მარტო საფუძვლიანად დაეუფლონ ინგლისურ ენას,
არამედ მზად იყვნენ დამოუკიდებელი ცხოვრებისათვის თანამედროვე სამყაროში.

Another Name in the Guestbook of the English Speaking Club

On May 16th,
the English Speaking Club (ESC) at ATSU English Philology Department was happy to host Professor of Educational Management at the University of Arkansas, USA,
John Pijanowski.
John has a Georgian wife,
Keti Mamiseishvili,
a former graduate and one of the most outstanding members of the EPD staff,
who has been in the US since 2001 advancing her career in the field of higher education.
Originally,
John came to Kutaisi on the Fulbright Scholarship Program to do research for his book.
But it also turned out that there was an opportunity for him to work with the University administration and interact with the staff and students of our department.
Members of the English Speaking Club decided to introduce the Club activities to the honorable guest and organized an informal and friendly meeting that was attended by teachers and students of EPD.

ჯონ პიანოვსკის.
ჯონის მეუღლე ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის ბრწყინვალე კურსდამთავრებული და ერთ-ერთი გამორჩეული სპეციალისტი,
ქეთი მამისეიშვილი 2001 წლიდან აშშ-ში იმყოფება და წარმატებით მოღვაწეობს უმაღლესი განათლების სფეროში.
თავდაპირველად,
ჯონი ქუთაისს ფულბრაიტის სტიპენდიის პროგრამის ფარგლებში ეწვია,
რათა ემუშავა თავის წიგნზე.
თუმცა,
გამოჩნდა შესაძლებლობა,

The ESC president and vice-president started the event with a brief review of the past years of the Club,
that is nearly 45 years old.
After that some participants presented their amateur activities such as singing,
reciting poetry and playing a quiz game.
The funniest part of the event was a question-answer time.
John,
together with his adorable son,
Jack answered the students’ questions concerning both private and professional issues.
In the end,
John expressed his gratitude to everyone and mentioned that when he entered into his first conversation with the students,
he expected to meet language barriers and that the students would be at different levels of learning,
but as a group they were so bright,
so well-educated and so deeply curious that he found himself continuing to teach them more and more advanced materials.
We strongly believe that this success is a credit to the English Philology Department and to students to which ESC might be making its own contribution.

English Speaking Club Receives Guests of Honour

I`m so experienced in attending all kind of meetings at the University that I have got used to the thought that nothing is likely to impress me anymore.
However,
this time I found myself at the lecture listening to the man who was talking about educational system so passionately and interestingly that I could hardly breathe.
The lecturer was Professor John Pijanovski.
His first lecture was followed by two more,
and my interest in them grew into admiration.
Then my new emotions continued with the meeting John’s son,
Jack.
Jack is an 8-year-old buy with adulty thought.
What differs him from other children is that he has a very right and adequate vison of life for his age.
It was just my inner thoughts and now I will try to make it clear for you.
After other students and I met professor John and felt that communicating with him was a great pleasure we decided to plan a club event where we would introduce our club activities to him.
It was one of the best club meetings we had held,
mostly because the students were very curious about American life.
After a few songs and poems we continued our dialogue with John and Jack and asked them some personal questions.
Every question that John was asked was answered by Jack too.
When one of the members of the club asked Jack to describe himself using only three words he gave a very mature and analyzed answer that he is energetic,
curious and tall.
His answer to our question about what he would like to become when he grows up was amazing.
He turned out to be inspired by Sherlock Holmes and his great wish is to become a detective.
Hearing his answer some of us remembered the time when we dreamed of becoming FBI agents when we were as young as he.
I can’t help mentioning that the relationship between father and son was heart melting.
Almost everyone felt the same.
All,
like me were in love with this wonderful family.

I remember calling my mom as soon as the meeting of the club was over excitedly telling her what an interesting meeting we had. I’m very happy that the English Philology Department gives us so many interesting opportunities to meet and communicate with remarkable people, to learn new things and just simply be a part of new friendships.

There are people who literally shine through success, the secret of which is to love life, to love people and to enjoy doing their work. These people impress the youth and have a great influence on their attitudes towards life. The lecture - “Moral Mind in Action” conducted by a professor of Arkansas University, a very creative and charming man, John Pijanowski was unquestionably a positive message to our students. It was clearly seen from their delighted faces and emotional comments they made on it.

As it has already been mentioned above, John’s wife Kate Mamiseishvili is a very successful lady who left Kutaisi years ago to study at the University of Missouri-Columbia with clear goals to do Educational Management, a very special field of study nowadays. Now she shares her knowledge and experience with the department staff who are not afraid of any innovations, reforms, experiments and are determined to overcome all obstacles.

Kate’s successful career is the evidence of her talent and hard work,
of course.
At the University of Arkansas,
she found new opportunities and met her charming spouse John,
who has already become our great friend.
No need to say that Kate’s parents,
who brought her up,
the environment in which she grew up and people who taught her,
played a great role in her life.
I would like to take this opportunity and express my respect and special love to her mother Darejan who is well-known and highly respected by many people in our city as a professional and a noble person who never refuses to help people when they ask for her advice and support.
I would like to express my gratitude to Darejan for bringing up a daughter we all are proud of.
I am happy that I have also made some contribution to Kate’s success.
Summing up my impressions on John’s lecture I mentioned that I would like our lecturers to be like him.
Along with a good education,
it is essential to be creative,
and to have close and lively relationship with students.
I have always believed that we have experienced and distinguished teachers and it has always been very important to us to maintain high standard international links in the field of education.
Our department has a huge resource for it.
I believe that,
this talented couple,
Kate and John with their qualifications and friendship will add one of the best pages in the history of our department.
