The ATSU Department of English Philology,
founded many years ago,
is a leading university department ranked as one of the best in Georgia.
It is deeply committed to promoting the English language,
improving the quality of its teaching and preparing its graduates as professionals in education and other walks of life.
Under the leadership of Prof. Madonna Megrelishvili,
who headed the department for many especially successful years it transformed its image.
Apart from introducing many innovations in teaching it also started to offer new programmes in the field of linguistics and methodology.
It gained the department great recognition and a high reputation in Georgia and beyond its borders.
For nearly 30 years,
the Department has been involved in the Kutaisi Newport twinning.
Close links of friendship and cooperation with NKTA have made a great contribution to the Department’s successful development and achievements.
It was two and a half years ago that Prof. Megrelishvili and ATSU Honorary Professor Derek Butler came up with an idea to write a book about the history of the Department’s past,
present and future – a book in which nobody and nothing is forgotten.
Derek also suggested entitling the book “Honouring Our Past, Celebrating Our Future”.
The idea excited the interest of the staff and was unanimously supported,
although at first it seemed next to impossible to be realized.
Madonna defined the tasks and the work on the book started.
It was a serious undertaking and its success depended on our work.
აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტს დიდი ხნის ისტორია აქვს და დღემდე ღირსეულად უჭირავს ერთ-ერთი წამყვანი ადგილი საქართველოს უნივერსიტეტებს შორის.
ის აქტიურად იღწვის ინგლისური ენისა და ლიტერატურის სწავლების ხარისხის გაუმჯობესებისათვის და აყალიბებს კურსდამთავრებულებს პროფესიონალებად,
რომლებიც წარმატებით იღწვიან როგორც განათლების სფეროში,
ისე ცხოვრების სხვადასხვა ასპარეზზე.
პროფესორ მადონა მეგრელიშვილის ხელმძღვანელობის საკმაოდ ხანგრძლივ და ყველაზე წარმატებულ წლებში დეპარტამენტმა იმიჯი შეიცვალა.
სწავლების პროცესისთვის შემუშავებული ინოვაციების გარდა,
მან ასევე შემოგვთავაზა უაღრესად ნაყოფიერი პროგრამები ლინგვისტიკისა და მეთოდიკის სფეროში.
სწორედ ამან მოუტანა დეპარტამენტს დიდი აღიარება და მაღალი რეპუტაცია როგორც ქვეყნის შიგნით,
ისე მის ფარგლებს გარეთ.
30 წლის მანძილზე დეპარტამენტი აქტიურადაა ჩართული ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის ასოციაციის მუშაობაში.
ამ ორი ქალაქის წარმატებულმა მეგობრობამ და ურთიერთთანამშრომლობამ დიდი წვლილი შეიტანა დეპარტამენტის განვითარებასა და ნაყოფიერ მუშაობაში.
დაახლოებით 2 წლის წინ პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი და აკაკი წერეთლის უნივერსიტეტის საპატიო პროფესორი დერეკ ბატლერი გამოვიდნენ ინიციატივით,
რომ დაწერილიყო დეპარტამენტის წარსულის,
აწმყოსა და მომავლის ისტორიის ამსახველი წიგნი - წიგნი,
რომელშიც არავინ და არაფერია მივიწყებული.
დერეკმა ასევე მოგვაწოდა წიგნის სათაურიც „პატივს მივაგებთ წარსულს,
ვქმნით მომავალს!".
ამ იდეას აკადემიური პერსონალი დიდი ინტერესით და ენთუზიაზმით შეხვდა,
თუმცა თავდაპირველად ეს ყველაფერი მიუღწეველი მწვერვალი ჩანდა/თუმცა თავდაპირველად ეს ყველას შეუძლებლად მიაჩნდა.
ქალბატონმა მადონამ დავალებები გადაანაწილა და წიგნზე მუშაობაც აქტიურად დაიწყო.
ეს იყო უაღრესად სერიოზული პროექტი და მისი წარმატება მთლიანად ჩვენს მუშაობაზე იყო დამოკიდებული.
We are proud of the way the contributors have worked together as a team during the past two years to exchange their views, problems and ideas. In many ways we were also assisted by people who took a great interest in the book and were ready to share their memories with us. What we set out to achieve was accomplished last August and a wonderful 428-page book with a lot of photos came out edited by two editors Professor Nino Kirvalidze and journalist Nanuli Tskvediani. It took two and a half years to achieve the goal as we didn’t want to omit any detail from the long and interesting history of the Department and also wanted to pay tribute to all who worked in it.
გვსურს სიამაყით განვაცხადოთ, რომ ერთ დიდ გუნდად შეკრული წიგნზე მომუშავე ადამიანები გასული ორი წლის მანძილზე აქტიურად უზიარებდნენ ერთმანეთს იდეებს, პრობლემებს და მათ ხედვას ამა თუ იმ საკითზე. ასევე დიდი დახმარება გაგვიწია იმ ხალხმა, ვინც უდიდესი ინტერესი გამოხატა წიგნის მიმართ და დაუზარებლად გვიზიარებდნენ თავიანთ მოგონებებს დეპარტემენტზე. ჩვენი თავდაუზოგავი შრომის შედეგი გასულ აგვისტოში დავდეთ და უკვე ხელთ გვქონდა 428 გვერდიანი - პროფესორ ნინო კირვალიძისა და ჟურნალისტ ნანული ცხვედიანის რედაქტორობით გამოცემული წიგნი უამრავი თანდართული ფოტოთი. მიზნის მისაღწევად 2 წელი და ნახევარი დაგვჭირდა, რადგან არ გვინდოდა გამოგვრჩენოდა ყველაზე უმნიშვნელო დეტალიც კი, რაც ჩვენი დეპარტამენტის ხანგრძლივ ისტორიას უკავშირდება. ასევე გვინდოდა სათანადოდ წარმოგვეჩინა ყველა, ვისაც აქ უმუშავია.
The book launch took place in the University Assembly Hall on 18 October and was a highlight for the whole university and the city.
Among the guests were the Mayor of Kutaisi,
Rector of the university,
English teachers,
students,
alumni of the Department and dignitaries from Tbilisi and other cities of Georgia.
They all enjoyed the event,
which ended with the film about Kutaisi Newport friendship,
greatly.

“English Philology Department:
Honouring Our Past,
Celebrating Our Future!“
is the title of the book that was presented at Akaki Tsereteli State University on October 18,
2019.
The book describes the interesting and diverse work of the English Philology Department which began nearly eight decades ago and is based on the European model of education.
The authors of the idea are Professors Madonna Megrelishvili and Derek Butler.
Thirty-five staff members of the English Philology Department and the Language Centre participated in the book creation and some of them perfectly presented it to the audience.
The book clearly depicts that the secret to the success which the English Philology Department achieved is not only its high academic standard,
but also the knowledge,
skills and abilities it provides the students with.
Due to this fact,
before the presentation started Sophio Gorgodze – a former student of the Department,
currently Director of National Assessment and Examinations Centre,
expressed her gratitude towards its teachers.
The hall was full of invited guests,
who were given the above mentioned book as a present.
Its 200 copies were published with the financial support of the university.
„პატივს მივაგებთ წარსულს,
ვქმნით მომავალს!“ - ეს იმ წიგნის სახელწოდებაა,
რომლის პრეზენტაციაც აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტში (აწსუ) 2019 წლის 18 ოქტომბერს გაიმართა.
წიგნში აღწერილია ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის საინტერესო და მრავალფეროვანი საქმიანობა,
რომელიც დაახლოებით რვა ათეული წლის წინ დაიწყო და ორიენტირებულია ევროპულ მოდელზე.
იდეის ავტორები პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი და დიდი ბრიტანეთიდან მოწვეული პროფესორი დერეკ ბატლერი არიან.
წიგნის შექმნაში მონაწილეობა მიიღო ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტისა და ენათა ცენტრის 35-მა სპეციალისტმა,
რომელთა ნაწილმაც შესანიშნავად წარუდგინა იგი დამსწრე საზოგადოებას.
წიგნში ნათლად არის აღწერილი,
რომ ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის წარმატების საიდუმლო მხოლოდ მაღალი აკადემიური სტანდარტი კი არ არის,
არამედ ის ცოდნა,
უნარები და შესაძლებლობებია,
რასაც ისინი სთავაზობენ თავიანთ სტუდენტებს და რის გამოც მათ დიდი მადლობა გადაუხადა ყოფილმა სტუდენტმა - სოფიო გორგოძემ,
რომელიც ამჟამად შეფასებისა და გამოცდების ეროვნული ცენტრის დირექტორია.
დარბაზში უხვად იყვნენ მოწვეული სტუმრებიც,
რომლებსაც საჩუქრად გადაეცათ ზემოთ ხსენებული წიგნი,
რომლის 200 ეგზემპლარი გამოიცა ამავე უნივერსიტეტის ფინანსური მხარდაჭერით.
At the end of the presentation Professor Guram Lebanidze addressed the audience and pointed out that the contribution of the English Philology Department to the university as a whole is worth noticing and appreciating because it was the Department,
which under the leadership of Professor Madonna Magrelishvili has maintained the nature and the essence of the university when the prospect of its existence was in danger.
Professor Madonna Megrelishvili’s speech was especially interesting as she emphasized the patriotic nature of the book.
She could not conceal her pride in the fact that the book is written in perfect Georgian,
although it is about English philology and its authors as well as presenters are English language specialists.
According to her,
it has a great significance,
as love of the native language means great love for the nation itself.
As Rector of Akaki Tsereteli State University Rolandi Kopaliani remarked in his speech,
it was a day full of positive emotions.
He thanked the English Philology Department for its tireless work.
პრეზენტაციის ბოლოს აუდიტორიას სიტყვით მიმართა პროფესორმა გურამ ლებანიძემ და აღნიშნა,
რომ დანახვისა და დაფასების ღირსია ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის ღვაწლი ამ უნივერსიტეტის არსებობაში,
რადგან ეს სწორედ ის დეპარტამენტია,

რომ წიგნი დაწერილია შესანიშნავი ქართულით და მისი წარდგენაც მოხდა შესაბამისად მიუხედავად იმისა,
რომ იგი დაიწერა ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის შესახებ და მისი შემქმნელებიც და გამომსვლელებიც იყვნენ ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის სპეციალისტები.
მისივე თქმით,
ამას ძალიან დიდი მნიშვნელობა აქვს,
რადგან ენის სიყვარული ერის სიყვარულს ნიშნავს.

The English Philology Department:
Honouring Our Past,
Celebrating Our Future!
The book tells a story that began decades ago in a totally different Georgia - when our lives were very different from how they are now.
Over the past thirty or so years our nation has changed from being an integral part of the Soviet Union into a proud and independent country united around shared ideals where,
far from being forced to conform to systems imposed by others,
we are now creating new practices and,
in the field of education,
encouraging our young people to develop new skills,
explore new ways of thinking and initiate novel solutions to the challenges facing our nation.
This is an account of one Department within Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) that has strived to make a major contribution to the new dynamic Georgia and,
in so doing,
make a difference to many thousands of young Georgian lives.
The English Philology Department (EPD) is one of the most widely respected centres for English language learning and teaching in Georgia.
Throughout its long history,
even in Soviet times,
the Department excelled at the teaching of English language and literature.
It has trained more than 2500 professionals and has made a huge contribution to introducing and developing new methods of teaching English language and literature and promoting intensive research in its specialist field.
The book traces the history of the Department from the first introduction of English language teaching at ATSU (then Kutaisi Pedagogical Institute) in 1941 throughout various transformations and transitions to 1995 when the English Studies Department,
headed by Professor Madonna Megrelishvili,
evolved into an academic centre with a national,
and indeed an international,
reputation.
It then proceeds to outline the areas - academic,
social and cultural - where the Department has made a significant contribution to higher education in our country,
including the innovations that have been introduced to ensure that it is constantly upgrading all aspects of its work.
After briefly reviewing the stages in the development of the EPD over almost 80 years in Chapter 1,
Chapter 2 gives an account of some of the innovations and improvements in the academic process that have led the Department to achieve its outstanding results.
It includes information on how the Department has promoted advanced study and research in language teaching,
linguistics and literature throughout a wide range of courses.
Chapters 3 and 4 describe the programmes implemented at all three levels (undergraduate,
graduate and doctoral) that facilitate the integration of research results into the teaching process.
Chapter 4 in particular provides an in-depth look at the research concept of the EPD,
the PhD Programme in Contrastive Linguistics and research in the Department conducted within two distinct but interconnected directions:
Linguistics and English and American Literature.
Chapters 5 and 6 provide an account of the role the EPD has played in the implementation of educational innovations in Imereti region.
This involves close links with the region's schools and its contribution to the professional development of the region's English language teachers.
Chapter 7 covers another important area of the Department’s work – the wide range of extracurricular activities it offers its students.
Interest groups and societies include a Students’ Research Group,
an English Speaking Club,
a Translators’ Group,
an Annual International Conference on ‘British,
American and Georgian Cultural Studies’,
a Debate Club,
and a Cinema Club.
The Department’s diverse and productive international contacts are outlined in Chapter 8.
As part of the long-term development strategy the EPD has established links with universities overseas,
which has made it possible to foster the professional development of the staff,
invite British and American experts on a regular basis and arrange study visits to English-speaking countries.
The Department attaches a special importance to its collaboration with the Kutaisi Newport International Association (KNIA) that has greatly contributed to the promotion of cultural and educational links between Georgia and the UK (and specifically Wales).
The unprecedented success of the Association has greatly enhanced the work of the Department as the Department members are the main facilitators of the KNIA activities.

Catherine Philpott,
Caroline McLachlan and Geoff Edge have been elected Honorary Professors of Akaki Tsereteli State University to honour their work at ATSU.
Thanks to the outstanding dedication, responsibility and professionalism of the academic personnel,
the Department can boast of an impressive record of achievement.
Most important is,
of course,
the lives of the young people the Department has helped transform and the opportunities it has opened for them.
Thus,
Chapter 9 gives details of the success of its allumni throughout Georgia and beyond.
Special focus in this book is on the many graduates of the Department who are successfully employed in European,
American and Asian universities as professors and associate professors to say nothing of Georgian Universities and state education bodies where they occupy leading positions at decision-making levels.
They all remain in touch with the Department and many have even contributed to this book,
to the delight of current students and staff.
The achievements of the English Philology Department have been acknowledged by many inside the country and abroad.
And it is these acknowledgements in national and international media,
as well as from the many friends and alumni that Chapter 10 presents.
Thus,
this history of the English Philology Department tells you about what we have done and what we are doing,
how we have developed over the years and how we have learned to teach young people and mould their lives for the better.
It explains why we are amongst the most successful Philology Departments in Georgia and how we intend to retain our primacy.
We were the first in Georgia to have had the opportunity to:
• Send students to the United Kingdom and the United States to study tuition-free
• Implement youth exchange programs financed by the European Council
• Use international textbooks of the English language
• Introduce international standards for curricula,
syllabi and CVs
• Design tests following internationally recognised criteria and conduct unified testing for school-leavers of Kutaisi and Imereti region
• Organise training for English teachers throughout the country,
the region and the city
• Integrate our website,
e-mail,
and access to the internet into the academic process
• Organise an international standard graduation ceremony
• Make a difference in the life of the cities of Kutaisi and Newport symbolised by opening Newport Street in the centre of Kutaisi and Kutaisi Walk in the centre of Newport.

რომელმაც პირველმა დაიწყო ჩვენი დეპარტამენტის ეს ისტორია!
ეს არის პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი,
რომელმაც ყველა თაობა გააერთიანა რეფორმების ხანგრძლივ პროცესში;
შექმნა ახალი აზროვნების გუნდი,
კონკურენტული გარემო,
წამოაყენა პირველი მოთხოვნა - დაგვესწრო აწმყოსთვის,
გვქონოდა საერთაშორისო კომუნიკაცია,
თანამედროვე ტექნოლოგიები,
საკუთარი ბიბლიოთეკა,
ჟურნალი,
გაზეთი,
მედიაკავშირები,
სწავლების სხვა სტრუქტურა და მუშაობის ევროპული მოდელი.
1995 წლიდან ჩვენს დეპარტამენტში საფუძველი ჩაეყარა ინგლისური ენის სწავლების მოდულურ სისტემას,
რომელსაც ანალოგი არა აქვს არამხოლოდ ქვეყნის,
არამედ მსოფლიო მასშტაბითაც.
ჩვენ მოგვეცა შესაძლებლობა,
საქართველოში პირველებს:
• გაგვეგზავნა სტუდენტები სწავლის ქირის გარეშე სასწავლებლად დიდ ბრიტანეთსა და აშშ-ში;
• გაგვეხორციელებინა ევროსაბჭოს დაფინანსებით ახალგაზრდების გაცვლითი პროგრამები;
• გამოგვეყენებინა ინგლისური ენის საერთაშორისო სახელმძღვანელოები;
• დაგვენერგა კურიკულუმების,
სილაბუსების,
CV-ების საერთაშორისო სტანდარტი;
• ჩაგვეტარებინა საერთაშორისო სტანდარტის ტესტირება ქუთაისისა და იმერეთის რეგიონის აბიტურიენტებისათვის;
• გაგვეკეთებინა რესურსბანკები - ინფორმაციის შენახვის ახალი სერვისი;
• მოგვეხდინა ტრენინგების ორგანიზება ქვეყნის,
რეგიონისა და ქალაქის მასშტაბით;
• გამოგვეყენებინა ინტერნეტი,
ვებსაიტი და ელ-ფოსტა სასწავლო პროცესის ორგანიზებისა და წარმართვისათვის;
• შეგვექმნა საერთაშორისო ასპარეზზე წარმოჩენილი ვებსაიტი: www.knia.ge
• დაგვენერგა დიპლომების გადაცემის დასავლური სტანდარტი - დიპლომების გადაცემის ცერემონიალი მანტიებში;
• გაგვეხსნა ნიუპორტის ქუჩა ქუთაისის ცენტრში და ქუთაისისა - ნიუპორტში,
რაც ორ ერს შორის დღესდღეობით არსებული უპრეცენდენტო და უბადლო ურთიერთობის დასტურია!
და ჩვენ ერთად ვართ დღეს და ერთად ვყვებით,
რა გავაკეთეთ და რას ვაკეთებთ,
როგორ გაგვზარდეს და როგორ ვზრდით,
როგორ გვასწავლეს და როგორ ვასწავლით.

განსაკუთრებით უელსის ქალაქ ნიუპორტთან.

It was a huge honour to be invited to attend the launch of the much awaited book on the history of this Department and my wife,
Dame Rosemary,
and I are sorry we are not able to be there to share this significant event with you.
As you know,
I have the huge honour and pleasure of being an Honorary Professor in the Department and it is one of my proudest (if least deserved) qualifications.
I look forward to receiving a copy of the book and I assure you it will be one of my most treasured possessions.
For over eighty years the Akaki Tsereteli State University has gained an unrivalled national and international reputation for the quality of the education it offers its students.
This has only been possible due to constant and unrelenting effort by its outstanding academic and support staff.
From personal experience I know that you,
the staff in the Department,
are constantly re-assessing and updating your methods and skills and searching out best practice from other leading Universities world-wide - including close cooperation with my `other` University,
the University of South Wales.
Like Wales,
Georgia,
over the past thirty years,
has emerged as a distinctive,
proud and independent nation.
It speaks to the world and the world takes notice and responds.
Without question,
this would not have been possible without the immensely vital contribution from the Department.
Now,
at long last,
the Department’s massive contribution to the well-being of present day Georgia is available for all to read in book form.

ეს ყველაფერი კი იმ მუხლჩაუხრელი შრომის შედეგია,

What a surprise to hear from Kutaisi after so many years!
I still think often of the three teaching stints and the kind and stimulating atmosphere signalled by teachers and students of the English department.
Here is something that you may use when the book on the English Department is presented:
A suggestion by Profs Keller and Strack brought me to Kutaisi and lovely Georgia for two stimulating weeks teaching interested students modern English linguistics,
twice repeated in the successive years.
I found the students highly motivated and was impressed by the staff fighting for the place of the best English department in Georgia..
It was a special honour to receive the degree of an honorary professorship.
I also remember with pleasure various excursions which showed me so much of the beautiful countryside - as far as Batumi.
I trust that you are still fighting for excellence under sometimes difficult conditions in a town and country that deserve a bright future.
Sadly enough,
it is impossible for me to come to the presentation.
If my activities in Kutaisi are mentioned in the new book,
a xerox of the respective pages would be very welcome.

Reflection On A 30 Year Relationship With The English Philology Department, Akaki Tsereteli State University

I first became acquainted with The English Philology Department,
Akaki Tsereteli State University,
when I visited Kutaisi in 1990 as part of a delegation from Newport,
Gwent in south Wales.
The delegation was organised by the then Mayor,
Dame Rosemary Butler,
who had very recently signed a formal civic twinning link with the Mayor of Kutaisi.
Throughout,
Professor Madonna Megrishvili played a significant role in ensuring a successful outcome in this process and has continued to do so throughout the 30 years that I have been privileged enough to know her.
During our visit we met many important individuals within the local community and,
in the case of the Patriach of Georgia,
in Tbilisi.
At this time,
few individuals spoke English so that it was due to members of the English Philology Department and their knowledge and use of impeccable and highly grammatical use of English,
that we were able to have meaningful dialogues about future collaboration.
One particularly significant aspect that has remained firmly in my mind was the clear determination of those we met from the Department to continue to develop and keep alive their knowledge of the deep structure of the English language/linguistics during the pre-perestroika years.
When we met in 1990,
one very positive aspect for our now firm Georgian friends was the opportunity to hear everyday spoken English from native English speakers.
Professor Madonna Megrishvili has over the years been a powerful force in enabling the English Philology Department to become a centre of excellence with an international reputation.
The twinning link between the two cities,
between the University of South Wales and Akaki Tsereteli State University and the two friendship associations (Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association and Kutaisi Newport International Association) has been a powerful vehicle for initiating student exchange and innovative projects.
Some years ago,
the Tempus Tacis programme introduced a modular system of teaching English and more recently a project which focussed on the development of critical thinking with students in the English Philology Department became a continuing pedagogic tool when working with individual groups of students.
I have learnt much from the English Philology Department during my visits to Kutaisi.
I have met with students,
been fortunate to have the opportunity to spend time with them talking about similarities and differences between our two cultures and also had the opportunity to learn from their professors and teachers.
I have consistently been impressed with the knowledge of and confidence in the use of the English language and in the choice of texts when studying English literature.
Many years ago when texts were difficult to access in Georgia,
I was asked to find John Fowles,
`the French Lieutenant’s Woman’,
for a PhD student.
This I managed to do and took it with me on my next visit to Georgia.
However,
before so doing I actually read it as it was an author hitherto not known to me.
What an excellent author and I enjoyed it so much that I have since read all his work.!!
My final thoughts must be to thank those in the Department from whom I have learnt so much over the years and who have enabled it to become the vibrant international centre of excellence with many partners worldwide.
These include Lalaya Kobeshavidze,
Associate Professors,
Nino Nijaradz,
Maia Alavidze,
Tamar Kobeshavidze,
Natia Zviadadze and Professor Madonna Megrishvili whose vision,
energy and expectations of excellence from both staff and students has made the English Philology Department what it is today.

როცა ქუთაისს ვესტუმრე,
როგორც ნიუპორტის (გვენთი,
სამხრეთ უელსი) დელეგაციის წევრი.
დელეგაცია ორგანიზებული იყო მაშინდელი მერის,
დამა როზმარი ბატლერის მიერ,
რომელმაც ცოტა ხნით ადრე ქუთაისის მერთან ერთად ხელი მოაწერა ორი ქალაქის დამეგობრების ოფიციალურ დოკუმენტს.
აღნიშნული პროცესის წარმატებული შედეგების უზრუნველყოფის თვალსაზრისით უმნიშვნელოვანესი როლი შეასრულა პროფესორმა მადონა მეგრელიშვილმა,
რომელიც ასეთივე როლს ასრულებს მთელი იმ 30 წლიანი პერიოდის მანძილზე,
როცა მე წილად მხვდა მასთან ურთიერთობის პატივი.
ვიზიტის დროს გავიცანით ბევრი მნიშვნელოვანი პიროვნება ადგილობრივ წრეებში,
ხოლო საქართველოს პატრიარქს შევხვდით თბილისში.
იმხანად ინგლისურ ენაზე ბევრი ვერ საუბრობდა.
ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტის წევრების და მათი სრულყოფილი ინგლისურის წყალობით შევძელით გვესაუბრა მომავალი თანამშრომლობის შესახებ.
ერთ-ერთი განსაკუთრებით მნიშვნელოვანი ასპექტი წარუშლელად შემორჩა ჩემს მეხსიერებას.
ეს იყო დეპარტამენტის წევრების აშკარა და მტკიცე გადაწყვეტილება - გაეღრმავებინათ და განემტკიცებინათ ინგლისური ენის/ენათმეცნიერების სიღრმისეული სტრუქტურების ცოდნა „პერესტროიკის“ წინა წლებში.
როდესაც 1990 წელს ერთმანეთს შევხვდით,
ჩვენი ამჟამინდელი გულითადი ქართველი მეგობრებისთვის უაღრესად დადებითი მნიშვნელობა ჰქონდა ყოველდღიური,
სასაუბრო ავთენტური მეტყველების მოსმენის შესაძლებლობას.
წლების მანძილზე პროფესორ მადონა მეგრელიშვილის ხელმძღვანელობით ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტი ხდებოდა საერთაშორისო დონეზე აღიარებული სრულყოფილი განათლების ცენტრი.
მეგობრობა ორ ქალაქს,
სამხრეთ უელსის და აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტს და ორ ასოციაციას (ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაცია და ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაცია) შორის წარმოადგენს სტუდენტთა გაცვლითი პროგრამების და ინოვაციური პროექტების ინიცირების მძლავრ მექანიზმს.
რამდენიმე წლის წინ ტემპუს-ტასისის პროგრამის ფარგლებში დაინერგა ინგლისური ენის სწავლების მოდულური სისტემა.
შემდგომში პროექტი,
რომელიც მიზნად ისახავდა სტუდენტების კრიტიკული აზროვნების უნარის განვითარებას,
გახდა საშუალება,
რომელსაც ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტში სისტემატურად მიმართავენ სტუდენტთა ცალკეულ ჯგუფებთან მუშაობისას.
ქუთაისში ვიზიტების დროს ბევრი რამ ვისწავლე ინგლისური ფილოლოგიის დეპარტამენტისგან.
გავეცანი სტუდენტებს,
გამიმართლა და მომეცა მათთან საუბრის შესაძლებლობა ჩვენს ორ კულტურას შორის არსებული მსგავსებებისა და განსხვავებების შესახებ.
ასევე,
ბევრს ვსწავლობდი მათი პროფესორებისა და მასწავლებლებისაგან.
ისინი მუდმივად დიდ შთაბეჭდილებას ახდენდნენ ჩემზე ინგლისური ენის ცოდნით და თავდაჯერებით,
რომელსაც ამჟღავნებდნენ ენის გამოყენების და ინგლისური ლიტერატურის შესწავლისას ტექსტების შერჩევის თვალსაზრისით.
მრავალი წლის წინ,
როცა ტექსტები არ იყო იოლად ხელმისაწვდომი საქართველოში,
მთხოვეს დოქტორანტურის სტუდენტისთვის მომეძებნა ჯონ ფაულზის ,,ფრანგი ლეიტენანტის საყვარელი“.
მომდევნო ვიზიტის დროს შევძელი ეს წიგნი საქართველოში ჩამომეტანა,
თუმცა მანამდე წავიკითხე.
მაშინ მის ავტორს არ ვიცნობდი.
როგორი შესანიშნავი მწერალი აღმოჩნდა!
ისე მოვიხიბლე,
რომ იმ დღიდან მთელ მის შემოქმედებას გავეცანი!!!
დაბოლოს,
მადლობა უნდა გადავუხადო დეპარტამენტის წევრებს,
რომელთაგანაც წლების მანძილზე ძალიან ბევრი რამ ვისწავლე.
მათი ძალისხმევით დეპარტამენტი გახდა სრულყოფილი განათლების საერთაშორისოდ აღიარებული ცენტრი,
რომელსაც ჰყავს მრავალი პარტნიორი მთელ მსოფლიოში.
დეპარტამენტის წევრების - ლიალია კობეშავიძის,
ასოცირებული პროფესორების - ნინო ნიჟარაძის,

During my ten years as Chair of the Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association,
the Department has been vital in ensuring the success of the twinning of the two cities,
Newport and Kutaisi.
During this time with your leadership and the dedication of the academic staff and the students,
the twinning link has developed into a strong robust international link.
The strong links which bind us together are a model of International Twinning all over the world.
The goodwill and understanding you have all shown to us in Wales is remarkable,
and I thank you sincerely.
When I first visited the University in 2005 I was impressed by the academic brilliance and enthusiasm within the Department displayed by both staff and students.
Many of those students have now become lecturers at the University and many have remained my very good friends.
Madonna,
you have been an inspiration to me and members of Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association during my 10 years in office as Chair.
Many of our successful international exchanges and projects have been a result of your superb leadership and guidance.
I would like to personally thank you and the English Philology Department for all the help and support I,
as Chair,
received during this time.
Without doubt,
the University and the Department of Philology in particular are Centres of Excellence.
