ქუთაისის სანაპირო – ასე ჰქვია ქუჩას, რომელიც დიდი ბრიტანეთის ერთ-ერთი ქალაქის, ნიუპორტის ცენტრალურ ნაწილს ამშვენებს და, რომელზეც ამ ცოტა ხნის წინ უდიდესი სიამაყით გაიარეს ჩვენი ქალაქიდან წარგზავნილმა დელეგაციის წევრებმა. ქუთაისის ქუჩა მდინარე ასკის სანაპიროს მიუყვება და სამკილომეტრიან მანძილს მოიცავს. მიდიხარ მასზე და გზად ულამაზესი ხედები გტაცებს მზერას. სანაპიროს ნიუპორტის ახლადაშენებული ხელოვნების უნივერსიტეტისა და რივერფრონტის მოდერნისტული თეატრის შენობები ამშვენებს. აქ აგრეთვე ნახავთ ხელოვნების ცენტრს, რომელიც დიდ ფოლადის ქანდაკებაა სახელწოდებით ,,ტალღა". მდინარეს მიუყვება განსაკუთრებული ბრჯენებით მორთული სასეირნო ხიდი, რომელიც ათასწლეულებს ითვლის. ამ უახლესი შენობებით დახუნძლული ქუთაისის სანაპირო შესანიშნავ და ჰარმონიულ გარემოს ქმნის. ყველა ნიუპორტელი ამაყობს, რომ დღეს ქალაქის გულში მათ ასეთი თანამედროვე მაგისტრალი აქვთ და მას ქუთაისის სანაპირო ჰქვია. შეეძლო კი ვინმეს ილუზიაში მაინც ეფიქრა ამაზე რამდენიმე წლის წინ? რათქმაუნდა არა, ჩვენ ხომ პატარა ქვეყანა გვაქვს მასში ჩაკარგული პატარა ქალაქით, რომელსაც ქუთაისი ჰქვია. მაშინ რით დავიმსახურეთ ასეთი დიდი პატივი ბრიტანელებისაგან, რომ დღეს ისინი თავს იწონებენ ქუთაისის ქუჩით თავიანთ ქვეყანაში? რა უნდა იყოს სხვა მიზეზი თუ არა ის 20 წლიანი მეგობრობა, რომელსაც საფუძველი 1989 წელს ნიუპორტის მაშინდელმა მერმა და პარლამენტის ახლანდელმა ვიცე-სპიკერმა, ქალბატონმა როზმარი ბატლერმა და ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის ახლანდელმა თავმჯდომარემ, აკაკი წერეთლის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის პროფესორმა მადონა მეგრელიშვილმა ჩაუყარეს. ეს იყო ჩვენი ქალაქის ისტორიის ერთ-ერთი უმნიშვნელოვანესი მოვლენა, რომელსაც შედეგად მოჰყვა ერების კულტურათაშორისი გაცნობა, გაკეთდა არაერთი სასიკეთო საქმე როგორც ერთი, ისე მეორე ქვეყნის ხალხისთვის და რაც მთავარია, გაიდო ის საშვილთაშვილო ხიდი, რომელსაც მაშინ ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის ,,დაძმობილება” უწოდეს. ...და დღეს, უკვე 20 წლის შემდეგ ამ ორ ქალაქს შორის არსებული ურთიერთობები საერთაშორისო მეგობრობის მოდელად აღიარეს. 20 წელი გავიდა, მაგრამ ქართველებისა და ბრიტანელების მეგობრობა ისევ ურყევად ინარჩუნებს მის პოზიციას, ამდენი ხნის შემდეგ კვლავაც ბავშვური სიხარულითა და ემოციით ეგებებიან ასოციაციის წევრები ყველა სიახლეს, პირვანდელი ენთუზიაზმით ეკიდებიან ისინი მათ მიერ წამოწყებულ ყველა კეთილ საქმეს, რადგან ღრმად სწამთ, რომ ეს მეგობრობა თაობებს გადაეცემა და კიდევ წლებს გაუძლებს. 2009 წელი, ასოციაციის დაარსების 20 წლის იუბილე გამორჩეულად აღინიშნა ნიუპორტში. ისინი ამ თარიღს თავიანთ ქალაქში ქუთაისის ქუჩის დაარსებით შეხვდნენ. 2010 წლის 8 სექტემბერს კი შედგა ქუჩის ოფიციალური გახსნა, რაზეც მიწვეული იყო ქართული დელეგაცია ქუთაისიდან. დელეგაციის წევრები იყვნენ ქუთაისის მერი გიორგი თევდორაძე, იმერეთის ვიცე-გუბერნატორი გიორგი შუშანია, ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის თავმჯდომარე, პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი და თარჯიმანი გიორგი წურწუმია. ჰისროუს აეროპორტში ჩასულ ქართველებს, რომლებმაც საჩუქრად მზიანი ამინდი ჩაუტანეს ინგლისელებს, თითქოს ,,სამაგიეროს უხდისო”, ასეთივე მზიანი და თბილი ღიმილით დახვდათ ბატონი დერეკ ბატლერი, ასოციაციის გამორჩეული და ერთ-ერთი ყველაზე აქტიური წევრი. დერეკ ბატლერი - დარბაისლობისა და კეთილშობილების განსახიერება, ადამიანი, რომელიც მუდამ მზადაა სიკეთისა და დახმარების ხელი გამოგიწოდოს ყოველგვარი ანგარების გარეშე. ასეთივე სტუმართმოყვარეობითა და დაუფარავი ემოციით შეხვდნენ ასოციაციის სხვა წევრები ჩვენ დელეგაციას, განსაკუთრებით კი ქალბატონ მადონა მეგრელიშვილს, რომლის წვლილიც ასოციაციის ჩამოყალიბებისა და შემდგომი განვითარების საქმეში განუზომლად დიდია. დელეგაციის წევრებს ერთი კვირის განმავლობაში კარლეონის ერთ-ერთი ყველაზე გამორჩეული სასტუმრო სტუმრობდა, რომელიც 400 წელს ითვლის. კარლეონი ძველი ბრიტანული სოფელია, სადაც ანტიკური რომაელებისგან დატოვებულ მრავალ გადმონაშთს შეხვდებით. სწორედ ამიტომ, ინგლისში ჩასვლის პირველ დილასვე ქუთაისელი სტუმრები ასოციაციის წევრებმა ლიზ ლაქმა, მაიქ სინგლეტონმა, ოლივ იანგმა და ნერის ლაინსმა რომაული მუზეუმისა და ამფითეატრის დასათველიერებლად წაიყვანეს. სამშაბათ დილით გუბერნატორის მოადგილე და თარჯიმანი როზმარი ბატლერის თანხლებით სამხრეთ უელსის ვაჭრობის პალატას და მის ხელმძღვანელს ჩარლზ ფერისს ეწვივნენ. შეხვედრის ბოლოს დაიდო შეთანხმება, რომ ზემოხსენებული დაწესებულების წარმომადგენელი ეწვევა ქუთაისს გამოცდილების გაზიარებისა და ქუთაისის ვაჭრობის პალატის მიერ განხორციელებულ აქტივობათა შესწავლის მიზნით. მოგვიანებით, დელეგაციის წევრები ნიუპორტის წმინდა ვულუსის ტაძარს ესტუმრნენ, სადაც ტაძრის წინამძღვარმა და ასოციაციის წევრმა ბრაიან კოქსმა გიდობა გაუწიეს მათ. ტაძრის წინამძღვარი სტუმრებს ტაძრის ლეგენდასა და მის ისტორიაზე ესაუბრა, და ქუთაისელების მიერ ნაჩუქარი წმინდა გიორგისა და წმინდა ლუკას ხატებიც აჩვენა. ქუთაისის ქუჩის ოფიციალური გახსნის გარდა მრავალი მნიშვნელოვანი შეხვედრა გაიმართა მხარეთა შორის. გარკვეულ შემთხვევებში დელეგაციის წევრები იყოფოდნენ, რათა უფრო ნაყოფიერი და მრავლისმომცველი ყოფილიყო მათი ვიზიტი. ისინი მიმართულებით ეცნობოდნენ დღევანდელ ბრიტანულ სინამდვილეს და გარკვეული პროგრამის მიხედვით მართავდნენ შეხვედრებს მათთვის საინტერესო სფეროში. ოთხშაბათ დილით, ქუთაისის ქუჩის ოფიციალურ გახსნამდე, ქუთაისელი სტუმრები ეწვივნენ ნიუპორტის სახანძრო სამსახურს როზმარი ბატლერისა და ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაციის თავმჯდომარის სონია ფიშერის თანხლებით. შეხვედრა გაიმართა დაწესებულების ხელმძღვანელთან, სამხრეთ უელსის მაშველთა სამსახურის უფროსთან ბარი მაქფასთან, რომელიც ამ რამდენიმე წლის წინ მასპინძლობდა ქუთაისიდან ინგლისში ჩასულ მეხანძრეებს და დაამტკიცა, რომ ჩვენი ქალაქის ნამდვილი მეგობარია. გარდა იმისა, რომ ბარიმ მხარდაჭერა აღუთქვა ქუთაისის სახანძრო სამსახურს, ის ასევე დაჰპირდა დელეგაციის წევრებს ქუთაისელი მეხანძრეების აღჭურვას სახანძრო უნიფორმებით, რომელთა ტრანსპორტირებას ქუთაისში ნიუპორტის ასოციაცია უზრუნველყოფს. 8 სექტემბრის სანაპიროს გახსნის შემდეგ ნიუპორტის ქალაქის საბჭოს წევრმა დეივიდ მეიერმა სტუმრები ნაგვისა და ნარჩენების გადამამუშავებელ ქარხანაში წაიყვანა, სადაც მათ საშუალება მიეცათ ნიუპორტის სხვა სამთავრობო წევრებთან ერთად ზემოხსენებულ დაწესებულებასთან დაკავშირებული საკითხები განეხილათ. ამ დროს პროფესორი მადონა მეგრელიშვილი ნიუპორტ ქუთაისის ასოციაციის მდივანთან ვერა ბრაუნთან ერთად ასოციაციასთან დაკავშირებულ საკითხებს ფინჯან ჩაისთან განიხილავდა. ხუთშაბათ დილით ქუთაისის მერი, გუბერნატორის მოადგილე და თარჯიმანი ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაციაციის თავმჯდომარესთან სონია ფიშერთან ერთად ,,მეიბი ბრიჯის'' კომპანიას ესტუმრნენ. ესაა დაწესებულება, რომელმაც გორში ომისგან დაზიანებული ხიდის ნაცვლად, დროებითი ლითონის ხიდი ააგო. როგორც სონია ფიშერმა აღნიშნა, საჭიროების შემთხვევაში მართლაც ღირს ამ უძლიერეს კომპანიასთან და მის მომსახურე პერსონალთან თანამშრომლობა. ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის თავმჯდომარე ქალბატონი მადონა

მაღალი რანგის პერსონალთან. ის გაეცნო სწავლების ახალ სისტემასა და მეთოდებს,
მოხდა გამოცდილებათა ურთიერთგაზიარება და დაიგეგმა პროექტი, რომელიც
ითვალისწინებს ინგლისელი სტუდენტის გარკვეული ვადით სწავლასა და ცხოვრებას
ჩვენს ქალაქში, რაც რასაკვირველია სასარგებლო იქნება ქართველი სტუდენტებისათვის

უნივერსიტეტის სტუდენტთათვის დიპლომების გადაცემის ცერემონიალს დაესწრო.
ვიზიტის დროს უნივერსიტეტის ხელმძღვანელობამ ქუთაისის უნივერსიტეტსა და
ინგლისური ენის ცენრტრს აღუთქვა დახმარება საჭირო სასწავლო მასალით. შაბათს ქუთაისის დელეგაცია
ნიუპორტის მერთან ბილ ლანგსფორდთან ერთად ნიუპორტსა და სუონსს შორის გამართულ
რაგბის შეჯიბრს დაესწრნენ. მათთან ერთად იყვნენ ასოციაციის წევრები ექიმი ჯონ დეივისი
და ქუთაისის საპატიო მოქალაქე დერეკ ბატლერი. დელეგაციას უმასპინძლა რაგბის კლუბის დირექტორმა, რომლმაც
მუზეუმი დაათვალიერებინა ქართველ სტუმრებს, სადაც ქუთაისის რაგბის კლუბის მიერ
ინგლისელებისთვის ნაჩუქარი სუვენირებიც აღმოჩნდა. აქვე ქუთაისის მერმა წამოაყენა მოსაზრება
ახლადგახსნილ ქუთაისის სტადიონზე ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის რაგბის გუნდებს შორის
პირველი მატჩის გამართვის შესახებ. |
Kutaisi Walk – it is now the name of a recently built street in the very centre of Newport, Wales, Great Britain and it was with great pride that the members of our city’s delegation walked along this street when it was officially opened in early September. Kutaisi Walk runs alongside the River Usk and is three kilometres long. As you walk along the riverfront your eye feasts on the surrounding views which include the large and recently completed Newport University Arts Faculty, the modernist Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, a massive steel sculpture entitled `The Wave` and a spectacular cantilevered pedestrian bridge built across the river to celebrate the millennium. These new and innovative buildings, all situated on Kutaisi Walk, create an exciting and harmonious environment. All Newportonians are proud to have such an outstandingly modern thoroughfare at the heart of their city and we are thrilled that it bears the name of Kutaisi - Kutaisi Walk!. Could anyone have imagined anything like this a few years ago? Certainly not! No one could have guessed that Kutaisi would ever have the honour of giving its name to a fine street in a far away British city. So what has led to this turn of events? The explanation arises from the twinning agreement between Kutaisi and Newport that dates back 20 years which was primarily initiated by two people, Rosemary Butler, then Mayor of Newport, and now Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly for Wales and Akaki Tsereteli State University Professor Madonna Megrelishvili, Chair of the Kutaisi-Newport International Association. The signing of the twinning agreement was an event of great importance in the history of our city as it resulted in many cultural exchanges and mutually beneficial projects between our two cities and, more importantly, the creation of close and long lasting links of friendship. After two decades the friendship between the Georgians and the British is as strong as ever and the unique link between the two cities is widely recognized as a model for international civic friendship second to none. Far from diminishing, the satisfaction and pleasure the Association members derive from all the activities associated with the twinning is greater than ever. The members are sure that this friendship will continue and be carried forward by future generations. The 20th anniversary of the Association was celebrated in Newport in 2009 and the official opening of Kutaisi Walk on the 8th September 2010 was part of the commemoration celebrations. The Georgian delegation present consisted of the Mayor of Kutaisi Giorgi Tevdoradze, the Vice-Governor of Imereti Region Giorgi Shushania, the Chairman of Kutaisi-Newport International Association Madonna Megrelishvili and the interpreter Giorgi Tsurtsumia. The Georgians were met at Heathrow Airport by Derek Butler – one of the most distinguished and active members of the Newport Association. During their stay the Georgians were widely praised for bringing good weather to Britain with them, and Derek’s welcome was equally sunny and warm. Derek Butler is a highly respectful and generous person who has always been more than happy to receive and host visitors from Georgia. Other members of the Association were equally hospitable and didn’t try to conceal their heartfelt emotion at meeting their dear friend Professor Madonna Megrelishvili again. Madonna’s contribution to the twinning and the formation of the Kutaisi Association is well known and she is always a very welcome visitor to Newport. The delegation members stayed in the four hundred year old Priory Hotel, one of the best hotels in Caerleon, Newport and apart from the opening of Kutaisi Walk, the highlight of the visit, a number of other major events were held during the week. For instance, Caerleon is an ancient village with some of the most outstanding Roman remains to be seen in Britain and on the first morning several NKTA members including Liz Luck, Mike Singleton, Olive Young and Nerys Lines took the visitors on a tour of the village taking in its two Roman museums and Roman amphitheatre. On Tuesday afternoon the Deputy Governor and the translator, accompanied by Rosemary Butler and Newport Councillor Charles Ferris, met members of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that a representative of the Chamber of Commerce will visit Kutaisi to share experience and to study the activities of the Chamber of Commerce in Kutaisi. Later that day there was a visit to Newport’s St Woolos Cathedral where the visitors were escorted around by the Dean and Association member Brian Cox. The Dean told them the legend of St Woolos and gave a brief summary of the Cathedral’s history. He also showed them the icons of St George and St Luke the Evangelist, both gifts from Kutaisi. It was a delightful visit that was enjoyed by all. On several occasions the delegation members followed separate programmes designed to suit their individual areas of expertise and make the visit more interesting and useful. On Wednesday morning, before the opening of Kutaisi Walk, the delegation visited Newport’s Fire Station accompanied by Rosemary Butler and Sonia Fisher, the Chair of the Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association. There they met Mr. Kevin Barry, the Chief Officer of the South Wales Fire Service. Chief Officer Barry hosted a team of Kutaisi firemen on a study visit to Newport several years ago and has proved to be a very generous friend of our city. As well as various other offers of help to Kutaisi fire service he has also organized the donation of a large number of quality fire fighting outfits to our firemen. The transportation of the outfits, which are very heavy and bulky, will be arranged by the Kutaisi Newport Twinning Association. The afternoon of September 8th (the day of the opening) will be covered later in this report. But after the opening Councillor David Mayer organised an interesting and informative visit to a waste re-cycling plant where the visitors had an opportunity to discuss re-cycling issues with Newport City officials. However, Madonna was allowed a welcome break and enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at the home of the NKTA Secretary Mrs. Vera Brown. On Thursday morning the Mayor, Deputy Governor and translator visited the Head Office of the local manufacturing company Mabey Bridge Limited, accompanied by Sonia Fisher. This is the very company that put up a temporary metal bridge in Gori in place of the bridge damaged during the recent war and Sonia Fisher made the point that a link with this company with its headquarters close to Newport could prove to be extremely useful for us in Georgia in future years. Meanwhile Professor Megrelishvili visited the University of Wales, Newport accompanied by Rosemary Butler and Mrs. Caroline McLachlin, another long standing supporter of the twinning. Madonna met the Rector Professor Peter Noyes and University staff and they shared their experience of systems and methods of teaching. An exciting project that will enable a Newport student to undertake a study visit to Kutaisi was discussed and enthusiastically agreed. It is felt that Georgian students will also benefit from the project as they will be helped to gain a mastery of spoken English by meeting and associating with a young person who has English as a first language. Later Professor Megrelishvili attended the University’s Student Awards Ceremony, a highly formal occasion when the students, dressed in their gowns, are presented with their degree certificates. During the visit the University authorities generously offered to donate text books and other material to both Kutaisi University and the English Language Centre. Later Madonna Megrelishvili had a meeting with Mr. Peter Landers, the President of the Newport Branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Mr. Landers confirmed that he is very hopeful that the youth exchange programme, eagerly anticipated by the winners of a recent competition in Kutaisi, will go ahead in the summer of 2011. Later in the week Peter Landers very kindly donated a full set of football kits to Kutaisi youngsters on behalf of Newport YMCA and this will be delivered with the firemen’s outfits. The delegation visited London on Friday with Sonia Fisher, Derek Butler and David Megrelishvili. The visit began with a traditional English lunch in a London pub and then they caught an open-top bus and saw many of the major sights of London - Whitehall, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square Later most of the party had a trip on the `London Eye` while Sonia and Madonna went shopping in the famous `Harrods` department store. This was the first visit to London for some members of the delegation and it was a day they will never forget. On Saturday afternoon the Kutaisi delegation, together with Councillor and Mrs. Bill Langsford (the Mayor and Mayoress of Newport), Dr John Davies and Derek Butler attended a rugby match between Newport and local rivals Swansea at the city’s rugby stadium. They were hosted by the Directors of the club and shown around its museum where they spotted three trophies and souvenirs presented to the club by Kutaisi Rugby Club. Then, before the start of the match, the visitors were warmly welcomed over the ground’s loudspeakers and this was followed by a few words on the healthy state of rugby in Georgia. During the afternoon the Mayor of Kutaisi suggested that a rugby match should be organised between the Newport and Kutaisi teams, an exciting prospect for all rugby enthusiasts in our two cities. Before the match the Deputy Governor and translator had a meeting with the Newport Rotary Club (a club composed of businessmen who arrange programmes of talks and social events and raise money for local charities) followed by a tour of Newport which included a visit to the magnificent sixteenth century Tredegar House. Later the visitors discussed the possibility of establishing a Rotary Club in Kutaisi headed, perhaps, by Mr. Rezo Robakidze one of the most active members of the KNIA. The Kutaisians enjoyed sightseeing in London and Cardiff but will never forget Newport itself which was looking particularly festive during the visit. The streets and major buildings were decorated with flags and banners and the city was ablaze with colourful flower displays as it prepared to host the Ryder Cup, a major bi-annual golf tournament between the USA and Europe that is being played in Wales for the first time this year. The city was looking at its best and it left an unforgettable impression on the visitors from Georgia. On the Saturday the visitors were escorted back to Heathrow in a comfortable chauffeur driven car by Colin Mason, the Treasurer of the NKTA. The Georgian visitors were welcomed by everyone they met in Newport and every evening they were invited to dinner by their hosts. Both Sylvia and Colin Mason and Rosemary and Derek Butler invited them to their homes were they were received with the greatest possible hospitality - cheerful evenings that should finally kill off any myths that remain about British aloofness. |

The Opening of Kutaisi Walk, September 8th 2010 It was a truly memorable event! Laughing Georgian and British friends walked the length of Kutaisi Walk in the late summer sunshine full of pride and joy. After the delegation and the others in the crowd were greeted by the Mayor of Newport, Kutaisi Walk was officially declared `open` to universal cheering and applause. In his speech, the Mayor of Kutaisi Mr. Giorgi Tevdoradze said: There is Newport Street in the centre of Kutaisi and now there is Kutaisi Walk in the centre of Newport- this is a vivid proof of our unique relationship”. The members of both Associations took photos that will act as permanent reminders of a remarkable day in the history of Kutaisi Newport friendship. After the official opening everyone gathered in the Mayor’s Parlour at Newport Civic Centre where the Chairs of Associations, Ms. Madonna Megrelishvili and Ms. Sonia Fisher, made short speeches. In spite of the fact that she had prepared a formal speech, Madonna could not control her emotions and, instead, made an impromptu one that well reflected her immediate feelings. We would like to present an extract from Madonna’s speech. She said “…This is an unprecedented event in the history of our country.
Even ten years ago a lot of people opposed the links between us and
predicted their uncertain future. Journalists were especially responsible
for casting doubt on the strength of the twinning. But today I proudly
declare that our friendship has endured all kinds of difficulties and is
rooted more deeply than our critics believed. Today’s event is the proof of
it and it is a cause for pride not only for the citizens of Kutaisi, but for
the whole Georgia. Could anyone dare to dream about this some years ago? Of

Mayor, and the City and people of Newport for honouring us in this way. May
our friendship continue to flourish and achieve ever more in the years to

At the Farewell Dinner held on the last night of the visit at Newport’s Hilton Hotel, Mrs. Rosemary Butler, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly for Wales, summed up the results of the visit as follows and noted that had been one of the most successful and remarkable visits in the history of the twinning. |

კვირის მიღწევები ნიუპორტის ასოციაციის წევრებმა დახვედრა მოუწყვეს ახალ ქუთაისელ მეგობრებს, რომელთა შორის იყვნენ ქუთაისის მერი და იმერეთის გუბერნატორის მოადგილე. მათ ასევე განაახლეს ძველი ურთიერთობები. ინგლისელები განსაკუთრებით გაახარა მათი საყვარელი მეგობრის, მადონა მეგრელიშვილის ნახვამ. ქუთაისის სანაპირო ოფიციალურად გაიხსნა ნიუპორტის მერის, ბილ ლანგსფორდისა და ქუთაისის მერის, გიორგი თევდორაძის, ქუთაისი ნიუპორტის საერთაშორისო ასოციაციის წევრებისა და საელჩოდან მოწვეული ქართველი დელეგაციის თანსწრებით. პროფესორმა მადონა მეგრელიშვილმა შეხვედრა გამართა ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტის რექტორთან პიტერ ნოიესთან და უნივერსიტეტის სხვა მაღალი რანგის წარმომადგენლებთან, რომლის შედეგად განახლდა და კიდევ უფრო გამყარდა კავშირები ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტებს შორის. ახალგაზრდა ქრისტიან ახალგაზრდა მამაკაცთა ასოციაციის პრეზიდენტთან პიტერ ლანდერსთან საუბრის შემდეგ გაირკვა, რომ დაგეგმილი ახალგაზრდული გაცვლითი პროგრამის განხორციელების შესახებ მუშაობა აქტიურად მიმდინარეობს. ბატონმა ლანდერსმა ასევე დიდი საჩუქარი გაუკეთა ქუთაისელ ახალგაზრდა ფეხბურთელებს. სამხრეთ უელსის ვაჭრობის პალატის წარმომადგენლები მზად არიან ეწვიონ ქუთაისს და

Achievements of the Week Newport Association members had the opportunity to welcome new friends
including the Mayor of Kutaisi and the Deputy Governor of Imereti and renew
old friendships. They were especially pleased to welcome a much loved
friend, Professor Madonna Megrelishvili. Professor Megrelishvili had held a meeting with Newport University’s
Pro-Vice Chancellor Peter Noyes and other senior staff and as a result the
links between the Universities of Kutaisi and Newport had been renewed and
strengthened. |

ქალბატონ როზმარი ბატლერის შემდეგ სიტყვით გამოვიდა იმერეთის ვიცე გუბერნატორი გიგა შუშანია. მან თქვა: ,,ღრმა პატივისცემით მივესალმები ქალაქს, რომლის კულტურასთან ჩვენ 20 წლიანი
მეგობრობა გვაკავშირებს. ამ წლების მანძილზე
ქუთაის-ნიუპორტის ასოციაციამ არა მარტო ჩვენი სიყვარულის მოპოვება შეძლო,
არამედ ბევრ საზოგადოებრივ ინიციატივას და მის განხორციელებას შეუწყო ხელი, რაც
ქვეყნის პროგრესისთვის არის მნიშვნელოვანი. არ დარჩენილა თითქმის არც ერთი
საგანმანათლებლო, თუ სოციალური საკითხი, სფერო, სადაც ნიუპორტელებს საკუთარი
წვლილი არ უდევთ და ეს მთლიანად ამ 20 წლიანი მეგობრობის კლასიკური შედეგია.
ჩვენი ქალაქების ურთიერთობა არის სხვებისათვის მისაბაძი მაგალითი საქმის და არა
ფორმალური პათეტიკის. მადლობა იმ ადამიანებს, ვინც საამისოდ იღვაწა, ვინც
საფუძველი ჩაუყარა ქართულ-ბრიტანულ ურთიერთობას. გვინდა უდიდესი მადლიერება გამოვხატოთ ყველა ჩვენი ნიუპორტელი მეგობრის მიმართ. ჩვენ დიდად ვაფასებთ ამ მეგობრობას და ყველაფერს გავაკეთებთ რაც შეგვიძლია, რომ ეს მეგობრობა და კავშირები კიდევ დიდხანს გაგრძელდეს.

The Deputy Governor of Imereti, Giorgi Shushania spoke after Rosemary and said: “I would like to greet you with deep respect. You are the city with which we are tied by a warm twenty year-old friendship. Over these twenty years our much respected Kutaisi Newport International Association and the Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association have together initiated many valuable schemes and seen them through to completion and this has played an important part in our country’s progress. Newport has made a major practical contribution to many educational and social spheres in Kutaisi and this is proof that the relationship between our cities is an example of constructive collaboration and not just formality. I would like to thank everyone here tonight who has contributed to this valuable work and, as a result, further strengthened the close links between Georgia and the United Kingdom. It is thrilling and re-assuring to know that when people walk along Kutaisi Street in Newport they will think of us, your friends in Georgia. It is one of the greatest gifts you could have given us and from now onwards will feature whenever the history of Kutaisi is written and discussed. Once more, I would like to thank you for this initiative and say that we are ready to support any project initiated by you!” A number of awards were then made. Derek Butler was officially presented with the Honorary Citizenship of Kutaisi and he responded by saying how awed and delighted he was by the honour. Then Vera Brown and Caroline McLachlan were presented with KNIA Certificates of Gratitude for their outstanding service to the twinning. Rosemary Butler was also given a certificate awarding her Honorary Membership of the Newport Kutaisi Twinning Association and, although they couldn’t be present to receive them in person, NKTA Certificates of Gratitude were presented Bernard Tyson and Catherine Philpott, past Chairs of the NKTA . It was a wonderful evening and a memorable ending to the visit.
Sonia Fisher and the members of the NKTA, together with the Mayor of Newport and the Newport City Council, did enormous work to organise this wonderful visit. We will do our best to give our visitors from Newport an equally warm welcome when they come to Kutaisi for the 20th anniversary of our Association in October in Kutaisi. And as we look forward to the visit of our Newport friends, we are thinking about arranging something special and extraordinary, so that they can experience the same feelings of delight we had during our stay in Wales. We would love to express our deep gratitude to all our Newport friends. We
here in Kutaisi treasure their friendship and will do all we can to ensure
