კეროლაინი გამოირჩევა როგორც ჩვენი მეგობრობის განსაკუთრებული მხარდამჭერი და დიდ ინტერესს იჩენს მის მიმართ. ის 1991 წლის ცივ ზამთარში წარმოუდგენელი პროექტის სულის ჩამდგმელი და განმახორციელებელი იყო, როდესაც ქუთაისელი სკოლის მოსწავლეები სტუმრად წაიყვანა ნიუპორტში. ბევრი ამ მოსწავლეთაგან წარმატებული ადამიანია და კეროლაინი მათთან ახლაც მეგობრობს. იგი აგრეთვე ქუთაისის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტისა და ინგლისური ენის ცენტრის სტუდენტებს ასწავლიდა და ბევრი ფასეული პრაქტიკული რჩევაც მისცა ლექტორ-მასწავლებლებს. ყოველივე ამისთვის მას ქუთაისის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტის საპატიო პროფესორის წოდება მიენიჭა.

კეროლაინმა ბევრჯერ მოინახულა ქუთაისი და ორჯერ ჩემი ოჯახის სტუმარიც გახლდათ. როდესაც ჩვენი საოცარი მეგობარი შარშან გაზაფხულს ჩამოვიდა, დიდი სიყვარულითა და მთელი გულით სტუმრად მიგვიწვია ბრიტანეთში. ვიზიტი ოქტომბრის დასაწყისისათვის დაიგეგმა, თუმცა შემდეგ რიგი მიზეზების გამო იანვრის შუა რიცხვებამდე გადაიდო. ჩვენ მშვენივრად, ყოველგვარი შეფერხებების გარეშე ვიფრინეთ თბილისიდან სტამბოლამდე და სტამბოლიდან სტანსტედში (35 მილი ლონდონიდან ჩრთილოეთ-დასავლეთისკენ) და ამოვისუნთქეთ შვებით, როდესაც ელეგანტურად ჩაცმული კეროლაინი აეროპორტის გასასვლელში დავინახეთ.

კეროლაინის თბილ, მყუდრო სახლში მისვლის პირველივე წამიდან ძალიან კომფორტულად და მშვიდათ ვიყავით _ ჩვენ უახლოეს მეგობრებთან თავს როგორც საკუთარ სახლში ისე ვგრძნობდით. კეროლაინის მეუღლე ნილო უაღრესად კეთილი და განათლებული ადამიანია. ორთავენი არაჩვეულებრივად სტუმარმოყვარე, მომთმენი და დაუღლელი მასპინძლები აღმოჩდნენ. ჩვენი შეხვედრის ბედნიერება და სიხარული მათმა საოცრად ლამაზმა კატამაც გაიზიარა. ვახშამის შემდეგ კეროლაინის უმცროსი ქალიშვილის ემის ოთახი გველოდა, სადაც იმ წამსვე დაღლილებს ჩაგვეძინა, წინ ხომ არაჩვეულებრივი კვირა გველოდა ბრიტანეთში!

ორშაბათს დილით მოვინახულეთ ნიუპორტელების ქუთაისელი რძალი, ქეთი ფოჩხუა, გავიცანით მისი უმცროსი შვილი მარკი და მათი არაჩვეულებრივი დედამთილი, რომელიც ქართველი ბებიების მსგავსად ძალიან მზრუნველი და თბილი ბებია აღმოჩნდა. ვიზიტის შემდეგ კეროლაინმა თავისი მანქანით გაგვასეირნა ნიუპორტის ცენტრში. დიდი სიამოვნებით ვიხსენებდი ნაცნობ ხედებს, ჯერ კიდევ 1994 წელს ნიუპორტში პირველი ვიზიტის დროს ნახულს. რთული გადმოსაცემია ის გრძნობა, რომელიც მე დამეუფლა იმ ქარიან ცივ დღეს, როდესაც უელსის მეორე ქალაქის ცენტრში ვსეირნობდი ქუთაისის ქუჩაზე. ეს ქუჩა ქუთაისის მერისა და ოფიციალური დელეგაციის თანდასწრებით საზეიმოდ გაიხსნა ნიუპორტში 2010 წლის სექტემბერში. სეირნობისას მე და თამრიკო არაჩვეულებრივი სიამაყის გრძნობას განვიცდიდით. რამდენი რამის გაკეთება შეუძლია ადამიანებს, თუ კი მათ მეგობრომა, მონდომება, ენთუზიაზმი და სიყვარული აერთიანებს.

ორშაბათი საღამო კეროლაინის სახლში ჩვენ არაჩვეულებრივ მეგობრებთან როზმარისთან და დერექთან ერთად გავატარეთ, რომლებიც ოქტომბერში სტუმრობდნენ ქუთაისს და მათი ნახვა იქ თითქმის შეუძლებელი აღმოჩნდა იმდენად დაკავებული განრიგი ჰქონდათ. კეროლაინის გემრიელ სადილს ამშვენებდა მოციმციმე სანთლების შუქი და როზმარის მიერ ნაჩუქარი ჩინებული ვარდების თაიგული. ჩვენ ვსაუბრობდით ქუთაისი-ნიუპორტის მეგობრობასა და და იმ ახალ პროექტებზე, რომელთა განხორციელებაც ახლო მომავალში მოხდება. გავიხსენეთ ის დრო, როდესაც მე და მადლენი ნიუპორტში გვენტის უმაღლესი განათლების კოლეჯის რექტორის მიერ მიწვეულნი ვიყავით კვალიფიკაციის ასამაღლებლად, და როზმარი, კეროლაინი და დერეკი როგორ ზრუნავდნენ ჩვენზე, როგორც პატარა ბავშვებზე, მეფურად გვეპყრობოდნენ და განებივრებულნი გამოგვიშვეს სახლში. ასეთი სითბოსა და ყურადღების დავიწყება შეუძლებელია!

სამშაბათს დილით კეროლაინის სახლში გვესტუმრა ნიუპორტი ქუთაისის ასოციაციის თავმჯდომარე, ძალიან სასიამოვნო ქალბატონი, სონია ფიშერი. ის ენთუზიაზმით აღსავსე პიროვნებაა და არც ენერგიასა და მონდომებას ზოგავს ასოციაციისათვის კარგი მომავალის შესაქმნელად.

შუადღისას კეროლაინთან და ნილთან ერთად მეჩვიდმეტე საუკუნის სიძველით სავსე მყუდრო რესტორან “ბელ”-ში ვისადილეთ, ხოლო შემდეგ მოვინახულეთ კარლეონი, მშვენიერი პატარა ქალაქი ძველი რომაული ისტორიით. აგრეთვე რომაელი ჯარების აბანოების მუზეუმი დავათვალიერეთ, რომელიც სრულიად რეკონსტრუირებულია, კომპიუტერიზებულია და არაჩვეულებრივ სანახაობას წარმოადგენს მნახველთათვის. სახლში დაბრუნებისას კიდევ ერთი სასიხარულო სიურპრიზი გველოდა - ჩვენს სანახავად მოვიდა სტივ ჰოზელიტზი. სტივთან ერთად, რომელიც ძალიან დიდი ხნის უნახავი გვყავდა, ორი არაჩვეულებრივი საათი გავატარეთ და ჩვენ ქალაქებს შორის მეგობრობასთან და ასოციაციასთან დაკავშირებული არა ერთი დაუვიწყარი ეპიზოდი გავიხსენეთ. ცნობილი ჟურნალისტი ამჯერად ორიგინალური თიხის ქოთნების ძერწვით არის გატაცებული. მან ჩვენდა სასიხარულოდ, სურვილი გამოთქვა კვლავ აქტიური მონაწილეობა მიიღოს ასოციაციის მუშაობაში, მოინახულოს განახლებული ქუთაისი და თავისი გამოცდილება ჩვენ ჟურნალისტებს გაუზიაროს.

დღის დასასრულს ჩვენმა მასპინძლებმა წაგვიყვანეს კინოთეატრში პრემიერაზე “მეფის სიტყვა”. ფილმი ძლიერ შთამბეჭდავი აღმოჩნდა. იგი ძალიან ინგლისური იყო, ინგლისურ რეალობაზე შექმნილი და ჩვენ მას ინგლისელ მაყურებელთან ერთად ვუყურებდით. ფილმი ოსკარის ჯილდოს ნამდვილად იმსახურებს.

ოთხშაბათს დილით გავემგზავრეთ კვმბრენში, როგორც კეროლინმა გვითხრა, ეს შოპინგებისათვის საუკეთესო ადგილი იყო, სადაც ქუთაისში ჩამოსატანი საჩუქრების დიდი არჩევანი გველოდა. სადილზე კი მიგვიწვიეს არაჩვეულებრივად მყუდრო და სასიამოვნო, Priory Hotel-ის რესტორანში, სადაც ჩვენ დათო მეგრელიშვილმა გვიმასპინძლა. ნიუპორტში გატარებულმა წლებმა მას დიდი ცოდნა და გამოცდილება შესძინა და ჩამოყალიბებულ, დამოუკიდებელ პიროვნებად აქცია, რომელიც იმედიანად უყურებს თავის მომავალს საქართველოში, სადაც სულ მალე აპირებს დაბრუნებას. გემრიელ სადილთან ერთად ბევრიც ვიმხიარულეთ, სადაც კეროლაინი და დათო თავიანთი შესანიშნავი იუმორის გრძნობით ერთმანეთს ეჯიბრებოდნენ. დათოს საღამოს ისევ შევხვდით, როდესაც კეროლაინმა თავის სახლში ნიუპორტელი მეგობრების შეხვედრა მოაწყო. სასიამოვნო იყო ისევ შევხვედროდით ძველ მეგობრებს ვერა ბრაუნს, სილვია და კოლინ მეიზონებს, კლარ ვოტკინს და ლესლი დუგლას, ნიუპორტის უნივერსიტეტის ლექტორს, რომელიც ასევე დაინტერესდა ნიუპორტი-ქუთაისის მეგობრობით და ქუთაისში ჩამოსვლის დიდი სურვილი გამოთქვა.

ხუთშაბათს დილით როზმარიმ და დერეკმა წაგვიყვანეს უელსის დედაქალაქ კარდიფში, სადაც უელსის პარლამენტი, კარდიფის სასახლე, ეროვნული მუზეუმი და გალერეაა. ხელოვნების დიდმა მცოდნემ, ჩვენმა შესანიშნავმა გიდმა, დერეკმა ექსკურსია ჩაგვიტარა ეროვნულ მუზეუმსა და გალერეაში, რომელიც შეიცავს ევროპაში იმპრესიონისტთა ნამუშევრების ერთ-ერთ საუკეთესო კოლექციას. როზმარის მეშვეობით მოგვეცა საშუალება გვენახა უელსის პარლამენტის ორიგინალური ნაგებობა, რომელიც ევროპაში ყველაზე ახალგაზრდა პარლამენტის შენობაა და უახლესი თანამედროვე ტექნოლოგიებითა და ეკოლოგიურად სუფთა მასალებითაა აგებული. როზმარი ბატლერი უელსის პარლამენტის ვიცე-სპიკერია და მას უამრავი საქმე და მოვალეობა აკისრია, მიუხედავად ამისა ის, როგორც ნიუპორტის დეპუტატი სულ პოულობს დროს შეხვდეს თავის ამომრჩეველს, მოისმინოს მათი მოთხოვნები და დაეხმაროს მათ პრობლემების მოგვარებაში.

საღამოს კარლეონში ნიუპორტი-ქუთაისის ასოციაციის გამოსამშვიდობებელი საღამო გველოდა მე-19 საუკუნის პაბში, რომელსაც ოდესღაც ცნობილი ინგლისელი პოეტი ალფრედ ტენისონი ესტუმრა. მისი ფოტოსურათები და ლექსებიდან ამონარიდები ყველა კედელს ამშვენებდა. დიდებული საღამო გავატარეთ ჩვენს მეგობრებთან (როზმარი, დერეკი, სონია, სილვია, კოლინი, კეთრინი) და ნიუპორტის მერიის ორ მრჩეველთან გაილ გაილესთან და ჩარლზს ფერისთან ერთად. ნიუპორტის ასოციაციას არც თუ ისე ბევრი წევრი ჰყავს, მაგრამ ყველა სავსეა მეგობრობით, ენთუზიაზმითა და ქუთაისისადმი დიდი ინტერესით, პატივისცემითა და სიყვარულით. ასე დასრულდა ჩვენი ვიზიტი ნიუპორტში, წინ ლონდონი გველოდა.

პარასკევს დილით კომფორტაბელური ავტობუსით ლონდონში, ვიქტორიას სადგურში ჩავედით, რომელთანაც ახლოს ძალიან მყუდრო, თანამედროვე სასტუმროში გავჩერდით. ეს ჩვენი მასპინძლის კიდევ ერთი გულუხვი და დაუვიწყარი საჩუქარი იყო. პირველ რიგში ლონდონში კეროლაინის მეგობართან, მეტად საინტერესო ქალბატონთან, სიუსთან ლანჩი გველოდა. ამ ქალბატონს მოვლილი აქვს თითქმის მთელი მსოფლიო, ლაპარაკობს რამდენიმე ენაზე, დიდი ქველმოქმედია, ეხმარება ლტოლვილებს ხორვატიიდან და სიკვდილმისჯილ ადამიანთან აქვს მიმოწერა, რათა მას ცხოვრების დარჩენილი დღეები შეუმსუბუქოს. სიუს უამრავი რამ გადახდენია თავს და მისი მოსმენა ძალიან საინტერესო იყო. მთელი თავისი ცხოვრების მანძილზე იგი ხელმძღვანელობს პრინციპით, ადამიანებს ბევრი რამის გაკეთება შეუძლიათ ერთმანეთის ბედნიერებისათვის. სიუს დახმარებით გავედით ბუკინგემის სასახლესთან, რომლის თავზეც ბრიტანეთის დროშა ფრიალებდა, რაც იმის მანიშნებელი იყო, რომ დედოფალი შინ იმყოფება. ნეტა რას აკეთებდა ის ამ დროს? ჩვენ კი მოლის ქუჩას გავყევით ტრაფალგარის მოედნისკენ, როდესაც კოკისპირული წვიმა წამოგვესწრო. ტრადიციულ ინგლისურ წვიმას, რომელიც მოულოდნელად იწყება და ასევე მოულოდნელად მთავრდება სავსებით არ გაუფუჭებია ჩვენი განწყობა. სიცილითა და ხუმრობით, სრულიად სველები, ტრაფალგარის მოედანზე იტალიურ კაფეში შევედით, სადაც ცხელი კაპუჩინო მივირთვით. ჩვენი შემდეგი სანახაობა მსოფლიოს სხვადასხვა კუთხიდან ჩამოსული ტურისტებით სავსე ეროვნული გალერეა იყო. საღამო ისევ ლონდონის ცენტრში ერთ-ერთ ძველ პაბში გავატარეთ და გვიან ბედნიერები, შთაბეჭდილებებით სავსე სასტუმროში დავბრუნდით.

მეორე დღეს მოღუშული, ცივი და ქარიანი ლონდონის დილა დაგვხვდა, თუმცა ამას ჩვენთვის განწყობა არ გაუფუჭებია. მოვინახულეთ ბრიტანეთის პარლამენტი, ვესტმინსტერი, კავალერიის მუზეუმი და ქუჩა,რომელსაც ეწოდება ემბანკმენტი, სადაც შეგიძლიათ ნახოთ ლონდონის ცნობილი ეშმაკის ბორბალი “London Eye”. ზამთარში ატრაქციონი, რომლიდანაც შეგიძლია დაინახოთ მთელი ლონდონი არ მუშაობს, თუმცა მასზე ასვლის სურვილი ნამდვილად არ გაგვჩენია, იმდენად შთამბეჭდავი და უზარმაზარია იგი. შემდეგ მოგზაურობა განვაგრძეთ მეტროთი, წინ კოვენტ გარდენი, პიკადილი და ლონდონის ერთერთი ძველი თეატრი “Apollo” გველოდა. კაროლაინმა კიდევ ერთი დაუვიწყარი არაჩვეულებრივი საჩუქარი გაგვიკეთა, მან თითქოსდა ჩვენი სანუკვარი სურვილები და ოცნებები ამოიცნო და ცნობილი ამერიკელი დრამატურგის კლიფორდ ოდეტის პიესის “სოფლელი გოგონას” პრემიერაზე მიგვიწვია. ცოლ-ქმრის, თეატრის მსახიობების, რთული ოჯახური ცხოვრების შესახებ პიესაში მთავარ როლებს ასრულებდნენ ცნობილი კინოსა და თეატრის მსახოიბები - მარტინ შო და ჯენი სიგროვი. ჩვენს მადლიერებას საზღვარი არ ჰქონდა - ლონდონის ისტ-ენდის ბოჰემურ თეატრალურ უბანში ცნობილი თეატრის პრემიერის მაყურებლები ვიყავით. არაჩვეულებრივი საღამო ისევ ლონდონის ცენტრში, კენსინგტონის ქუჩაზე, ქართულ რესტორან “მიმინოში” დავასრულეთ, სადაც “თბილისოს” აკომპონემენტის თანხლებით გემრიელი ქართული კერძებითა და ღვინოთი კეროლაინს გავუმასპინძლდით. ჩვენთვის ნამდვილი სურპრიზი იყო, სამშობლოდან მოშორებით ქართულ გარემოში მოხვედრა, სადაც, ქართული სამზარეულოს დიდ მოყვარულ კაროლაინთან ერთად უზომოდ ვისიამოვნეთ. სასტუმროში გვიან დავბრუნდით, თუმცა არავის გვეძინებოდა, იმდენად ვიყავით შთაბეჭდილებებით სავსე, თითქმის მთელი ღამე საუბარში გავატარეთ. დილით ადრე კომფორტაბელურმა ავტობუსმა სტანსტედის აეროპორტში ჩაგვიყვანა - ჩვენი დაუვიწყარი კვირა კაროლაინთან და ნილთან ერთად დიდ ბრიტანეთში დასრულდა. მათ თავიანთი დრო და ენერგია არ დაიშურეს, რომ ჩვენთვის სიამოვნება მოენიჭებინათ, ამდენი რამ გვენახა და თავი მშვიდად, კომფორტულად, ყოველდღიური პრობლემებისგან შორს გვეგრძნო. ჩვენი გაზეთის საშუალებით გვინდა კიდევ ერთხელ დიდი მადლობა გადაუხადოთ მათ. სამწუხაროდ, ჩვენ ვერ შევხვდით მათ ქალიშვილებს - ებიგაილსა და ემის (ისინი იმ დროისათვის არ იმყოფებოდნენ ინგლისში), მაგრამ იმედი გვაქვს, ოდესღაც ისინი საქართველოშიც ჩამოვლენ და ქუთაისსა და თავიანთი დედის უამრავ ქუთაისელ მეგობრებს გაიცნობენ.

ასევე ძალიან სასიამოვნო იყო ძველ მეგობრებთან როზმარისთან, დერეკთან, სონიასთან, სტივთან, ვერასთან, კეტრინთან, კლერთან, სილვიასა და კოლინთან შეხვედრა; ახალი მეგობრების შეძენა, რომელთაც ძალიან აინტერესებთ ჩვენი ქალაქი, კულტურა და მეგობრობა.

საქართველოში ისევ პეგასუსის ავიოკომპანიის თვითმფრინავით დავბრუნდით, ორივე მოგზაურობა (ლონდონში და ისევ უკან თბილისში) სასიამოვნო აღმოჩნდა: უსაფრთხოდ და კომფორტულად დავფრინდით თბილისის აეროპორტში. ბრიტანეთიდან ნიუპორტის მერისა და ასოციასიის თავჯდომარის, სონია ფიშერის, ხელმოწერით სერთიფიკატი ჩამოვიტანეთ, სადაც ისინი დიდი პატივისცემით ქალბატონ მადონა მეგრელიშვილს ქუთაისის საპატიო მოქალაქის წოდების მინიჭებას ულოცავენ. ქალბატონ მადონას დიდი დამსახურება მიუძღვის ქალაქის წინაშე და მათ შორის ერთერთი უმთავრესი - ქუთაისისა და ნიუპორტის ასოციაციის შექმნაა, რომელიც უკვე 20 წელზე მეტია წარმატებით არსებობს. ამ დიდი, ლამაზი მეგობრობისა და ურთიერთობის დამადასტურებელია ჩვენი ვიზიტიც დიდ ბრიტანეთში.

Caroline Mclachlan and I have been friends for over twenty years since the very first days of the Kutaisi—Newport Twinning. Being actively involved in it we have watched how every year has brought something new, how the twinning developed, improved and got stronger. We hope we both have passed some of our enthusiasm and interest in it to other members of the Associations who joined it later.

Caroline is popular for her many years of support and enthusiasm for the twinning. She was the driving force behind the idea of bringing a group of Kutaisi school students to Newport and successfully realizing this project in the cold winter of 1991. She is still in touch with some of these students who have become successful adults in many walks of life. Caroline has also worked with students of Kutaisi State University and the English Language Centre and has given a lot of valuable and practical advice to teachers. She was conferred Honorary Professorship of Kutaisi State University.

She has been to Kutaisi several times and stayed with my family twice. It was a great time for all of us. When Caroline, our wonderful friend, was visiting Kutaisi last spring she kindly invited my daughter Tamriko and me to stay with her. We set the dates for early October, but due to a number of reasons, including amazingly cold and snowy weather in Great Britain, we had to postpone the visit until mid January. Although we were concerned about flying we need not have worried,. the flights from Tbilisi to Istanbul and from Istanbul to Stansted Airport (35 miles north-east of central London) went very well, luckily without any delays and imagine our delight and relief when we spotted elegantly dressed Caroline waiting for us. Completely at ease now we got into a beautiful hired car which Caroline had reserved, ready to enjoy our new interesting experience.

From the moment we arrived at Caroline’s cosy house which became our home for the next some days, we were made most welcome and we knew that we were among very close friends. Caroline and her husband Neil, a kind, strong and very intelligent man, put us at ease at once. They were great hosts, very hospitable, friendly, patient and tireless. There was also a lovely pussy-cat in the house who also shared the happiness and joy of our meeting.

After having supper and discussing the plan for our visit, Caroline showed us to a very nice room belonging to her younger daughter Amy. We fell asleep at once to wake up early in anticipation of enjoying a relaxing interesting week with our friends,

On Monday morning, which was the start of this week, we visited Katie Pochkhua. Katie is from Kutaisi and she is married to Andrew Rock, a nice man from Newport. After having coffee and chatting with Katie, her wonderful younger son Mark and very lovely mother-in-law, Caroline drove us to the centre of Newport. I was pleased to recognize some familiar sites which I had seen visiting Newport in 1994, but more than just a pleasure on a wet windy day was to see and walk along Kutaisi Walk just in the middle in the city which was officially opened in September last year in the presence of the civic delegation from Kutaisi headed by the Mayor. Walking along the street Tamriko and I felt proud of how much can be achieved by people if there is friendship, enthusiasm and interest and the right support is provided.

The lovely Monday morning and afternoon were followed by a wonderful evening with our very dear friends Rosemary and Derek at Caroline’s. It was so lovely to see them again after their visit to Kutaisi in October when they seemed absolutely unapproachable because they were always surrounded by many people who literally had to queue to have a talk with them. Caroline treated us to a very delicious dinner and the beauty of the evening was enhanced by candlelight and a bouquet of wonderful roses which Rosemary gave us. We talked about the twinning and a variety of programmes which can be realized in the near future. I remembered how Rosemary, Caroline and Derek had taken care of us when Madlen and I were on a study visit in Newport by invitation of the Principal of Gwent College of Higher Education. We were treated royally and returned home nearly spoilt by them. It’s impossible to forget!

Tuesday morning was spent at home with a guest – chairman of the Newport-Kutaisi Association, a lovely woman, Sonia Fisher. She is very enthusiastic about the twinning and puts a lot of her energy and work to create its good future. We had a very nice chat about the twinning matters in Caroline’s sunlit guest room.

In the afternoon, after having lunch with Caroline and Neil in a very old inn “Bell”, Caroline took us for a walk around Caerleon, a pleasant little town with a Roman history. We made our way to the Roman Fortress Bath museum which has been completely reconstructed and computerized since I saw it in 1994 and is of great interest to visitors now. When we returned home there was another surprise. We were happy to learn that Caroline had invited Steve Hoselitz to meet us. We hadn’t been in touch with Steve for a very long time and we spent nearly two hours recalling memories of the early days of the twinning, Steve’s visits to Kutaisi and how our friendship which had lasted so many years had been forged. A renowned journalist, Steve told us about his remarkable current interest in making pottery and to our great delight he said that he would like to be integrated in Kutaisi-Newport links again and also visit Kutaisi to help our journalists who seek his expertise.

The day ended with another treat that our dear Caroline had prepared for us. Four of us – Caroline, Neil, Tamriko and I went to the cinema to watch a new film, “King’s Speech” which we enjoyed greatly. The film is really worth some Oscar awards.

Wednesday morning was a visit to Cwmbran, a good venue for shopping, to which Caroline kindly took us feeling that it would be interesting for us. It was fun as well and we bought some lovely things for Christine and Keso, Tamriko’s daughters. From Cwmbran we hurried to the Priory Hotel where we had been invited for lunch by David Megrelishvili. He met us with a big smile at the entrance and showed us in. The years in Newport have given him a lot of character-building experience and knowledge and have turned David into a mature independent man very Georgian in character and speaking perfect English. We were impressed by his successes and the competent way he has of managing his independent life. With his experience in Britain, he looks confidently to his future in Georgia. David treated us to a delicious lunch and amused us, competing with Caroline in their wonderful sense of humour. In the evening we met David again at the party which Caroline arranged for some of our close Newport friends. It was so nice to see Derek again (Rosemary couldn’t come) Vera Brown, Sylvia and Colin Mason, Claire Watkins, a lovely woman Lesley Douglas from Newport University who is also interested in getting involved in Newport-Kutaisi links. It was absolutely wonderful to chat with our lovely long-standing friends, so keen on maintaining friendship between our towns and it was a pity that the evening passed so quickly.

On Thursday morning Rosemary and Derek picked us up to take to the capital of Wales Cardiff, home to the Welsh Assembly, National Museum and Gallery, and Cardiff Castle. Rosemary left us at the Museum and drove on to her work in the Assembly. Derek, a brilliant connoisseur of art took us around the gallery showing and giving explanation of a fascinating world-class collection of paintings and other interesting exhibits of the museum. On that day in Cardiff, Derek also showed us Cardiff Castle, another major sight of the city and finally brought us to the Welsh Assembly where we were being waited for by Rosemary. After lunch she took us around the unique and original building of the Assembly with its wonderful views, we were extremely interested in seeing everything with our own eyes and thankful to Rosemary for providing a fascinating insight into her work in the Assembly. It’s just impossible to enumerate all commitments and duties which she has as Vice Presiding Officer of the Assembly and, apart from it, representing Newport West which also involves lots of meetings with people, listening to their wishes and complaints and sorting out their problems.

After enjoying our day in Cardiff, we returned to Caerleon to relax before a farewell party with members of the Newport Association. Later in the evening Caroline, our tireless little sparrow, who had spent the whole day doing her course in psychotherapy, took us to a delightful pub where we had a wonderful time with Rosemary, Derek, Sonia, Sylvia, Colin, Catherine, two Newport Councilors, Gail Giles and Charles Ferris, both Caerleon councillors. Newport Association is not too large in members, but it is large in friendship, enthusiasm and enjoyment, all take a keen interest in expanding relations with Kutaisi. It was our last night in Newport.

On Friday morning, Caroline took us on a delightful and most interesting trip to London. After a couple of hours’ drive, a comfortable bus brought us to Victoria Coach Station near to which Caroline had made a reservation for two rooms in a very cosy hotel with the best of modern comfort, another treat she had prepared for us. Having left our luggage in the hotel we had lunch to which Caroline had also invited her lovely and very interesting friend, Sue. The lady has travelled a lot, knows some languages, does a lot of charity work, helps refugees from Croatia and even corresponds with individuals on death row. She is very enthusiastic and friendly. Listening to her was very exciting and we thought that there were many things that each of us can do to make others happier. After lunch, having said good-bye to wonderful Sue, we began our acquaintance with London and first went to Buckingham Palace as we were just within a few minutes’ walk from it. The flag was hoisted over the Palace which meant that the Queen was in residence and I wondered what she might be doing at that moment. Seeing the Palace, we started walking along the Mall towards Trafalgar Square when it began to pour with rain, but we were not deferred by the bad weather and enjoyed the walk laughing, though absolutely soaked, until the three of us reached a cosy café where we got dried and had wonderful cups of steaming cappuccino. Feeling happy and warm we went out to see Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery which were full of people from all over the world. Late at night, after having supper and relaxing in an old London pub, we returned to our hotel tired, excited and looking forward to the next day because we knew that much was still in store for us to enjoy.

We had a good night’s sleep and woke up early to discover that Saturday morning was cold, grey and windy, of course, not the best morning for doing the sights, but nothing could prevent us from doing that. We visited the most famous tourist attractions – Westminster Abbey, the House of Parliament, the Royal House Guards saw the area of London called Embankment and a giant wheel called the London Eye; we went by the underground to Covent Garden, did some shopping there and then walked in Piccadilly until it was time to go to the Apollo Theatre, one of the oldest in London (it first opened its doors in 1902) for the premier of the Clifford Odets’ Country Girl ( matinee performance) -- one more treat arranged for us by Caroline, She seemed to have looked deeply inside us to read our thoughts and dreams and did her best to realize them. Miracles can happen! Full of anticipation we entered the theatre to watch a wonderful play about a turbulent life of a married couple with famous actors Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove in the leads. As great lovers of theatre we were happy nearly to tears to have this opportunity to visit a London theatre, and more than that, one of the oldest and most famous ones. It was a very happy and successful day indeed and we finished it with dinner in the Georgian restaurant ‘Mimino’ in London where we ate delicious Georgian food, drank Georgian wine and listened to our favourite ‘Tbiliso’. It was an amazing experience and we felt happy that our dear Caroline enjoyed it too. We returned to the hotel late but there was no question of any sleep. Packing our suit-cases Tamriko and I kept talking about the events of the day till very late into the night before flying home to Georgia the following day. Early in the morning, Caroline placed us on a comfortable coach with a friendly driver which took us to Stansted International Airport. Glimpsing at passing areas of the marvellous city and beautiful landscapes through the coach windows we realized with genuine regret that we had to say good bye to them.

Our wonderful and a truly memorable week with Caroline and Neil ended. They did all possible and impossible so that we could relax, knowing we had been short of it for a long time. Looking back at the visit we realize how much work, time and energy were put into it by them. May we through the medium of the Newsletter thank Caroline and Neil for everything they did for us. We know that very happy memories of this visit will be coming back again and again and will never fade. It was a pity that we could not meet Caroline and Neil’s daughters – Abigail and Amy. We hope that one day they will follow their mother and come to Kutaisi to get to know Georgia and their mother’s Georgian friends.

It was so nice to meet our long-standing friends Rosemary, Derek, Sonia, Steve, Vera, Catherine, Silvia and Colin, Claire; to become acquainted with new people who are interested in the twinning and to talk about those whom we regretfully couldn’t meet.

We returned to Georgia flying by Pegasus Airlines. Both journeys were good and enjoyable and we landed safely at Tbilisi Airport. We brought Madonna a certificate from the Mayor of Newport, and Chair of the Association Ms Sonia Fisher congratulating her on being conferred Honorary Citizenship for her service to Kutaisi, which also includes her 20-year service to the Kutaisi-Newport Twinning. We would like all readers of this Newsletter to know what a great pleasure and very special spirit of friendship we have found through the Twinning over a period of more than 20 years and no doubt our visit is another proof of it.
